Everything wrong with used bike - help

Bought a 2001 YZF426. New plastics, tires, runs great. Etc. Brought it home, rode it for the first time for any length, let it sit, came back. And found the following;

A small oil leak due to a hairline crack above the drain plug that had some sort of 'bondo' on it.

Water pump is leaking out the little "hole"

I am more concerned about the crack. It leaks about a drop in minute, so if I was a thrasher, I'd just keep adding oil. Would like to get this fixed. Can it be welded and if the drain plug hole stripped, can it be retapped? If so, take it to a dealer, or to a welding shop?

Second question, should I replace the whole water pump, or find out what is wrong inside? I am not a mechanic, so.....

I guess that's what you get when you pay 2400 bucks for a 2001 YZF. Better than 6k for a new 450!

Can the engine hairline crack be welded?

I would replace the water pump, As far as the crack, the best way is to get the whole motor disassembeld and if u take it to a welding the shop that is very good, or a rcae car shop the builds cars they should be able to weld it, When i had a cracked case i took it to the local race car builder and he welded it up no problem, If u don't want to take the motor to get disassembled, u could take it out of the chassis and drain all the oil, Clean that area where the crack is extremely well, and the welder might be able to weld it like that, key thing is it has to be as clean as possible to be welded good. good luck to ya hope it all works out.

The water pump is a seal. The crack will need to be fixed as stated above.

Mine is leaking out of that little hole too. You say that there is a seal that can be replaced?

The water pump fix is just replacing both the seals and the impeller shaft. 15$ job. The crack in the case can be repaired rather easily after taking the motor out of the frame. I had the same exact problem as you, I was unaware that the bike had a major crack under it which had be fixed with jb weld. We welded the crack up, machined an aluminum plug out of a lathe, and welded it in to the drain plug hole. We then drilled it out, helicoiled it up, and rode the piss out of it. Its been in for a year now with too many oil changes to count, and it doesnt leak.

Now that I think of it, I had the EXACT same problems as you right when I got the bike. The JB weld fix beucase of an overtightended drain plug.... also the coolant leaking out of the weep hole. Interesting.

While your already working on your bike, I recomend you install a new timing chain. Last year many of the 99 yz's had timing chain faluires and jumps, so the 00's should be next. The chain is cheap and easy to install with a flywheel puller!

that's called a weep hole and it is there to tell you that it is time to replace the waterpump or if you want just hte seal

Should I just bite the bullet and buy a new Crankcase assy ($336) and a new water pump ($224). I'd rather have something reliable. I bought the bike for 2200, so sinking a grand into it so that it's reliable would be better for me.

I have a good relationship with the shop, I'll order the parts myself. But of course they'll charge labor. How long do you guys figure it would cost a mech to change it out? 6 hours or so? I'm figuring a grand total.

Ditto as above! No need to buy a new case. Repair it first. helicoil the drain plug. You only need to replace the water pump seals and impellar shaft with the right side cover gasket for $60.00 total. ?

The repair is effective and reliable. Many of these water pump weep hole leaks are reported each year, and I bet YOU dont even know how they happen. There are two seals, if the one directly behind the impeller leaks, then coolant comes out the weep hole to tell you it needs replacement. The second seal is behind the weep hole and leads to the crankcase. The reason for the 2 seal setup is so when one leaks it doesnt go directly into the crankcase, and give the owner a heads up on whats happening.

So can you please explain to me why you would have to replace the whole water pump smarty pants?

And why would you need to replace the case whent he weld is just as strong as the metal itself.

but wouldn't a shop that welds aluminum, need to disassemble the crank case anyways? Or can they just weld the outside?

No, they can weld the outside, the weld will go through the metal to the other side.

Because I'm not a mechanic. Seriously. I do ride bikes, but always new one's and this is my first dirt bike, and first used bike. All advice is appreciated, harsh or not.

Ok, got the message on the water pump. Here are the following parts I found on the web, which one's do I need to order, and are they simple enough for joe-can-operate-a-screwdriver to fix? i.e. no special sealant

You got to disassemble the engine either way. ? You can not weld repair it without splitting the cases. And you cant replace the case without splitting the cases? I dont understand your thinking? ?

You only need parts 01,04,05 and the right side cover gasket for the water pump fix!

Also, lets set this straight and yes I have experiance on this, YOU CAN WELD THE CASES WITHOT TAKING THEM APART!!!

What the hell do you need the impeller shaft for? All you need is the stupid seal. Then weld the case. How hard is that. It won't even cost 10 bucks for the water pump. And they charge by the min for welding. I don't know what they charge for aluminum. But it probably won't be over 100 dollars all together.

I agree with bushy, u can weld the outside, just has to be really clean., I have had this done also.

And joe can operate a screwdriver and follow instructions can do the water pump repair?

And last question, do most motorcycle shops weld, or will they opt for "let's just replace it"?
