98 YZ400F suspension woes...

I'm trying to soften up the front suspension to make my bike more useable in the woods. (Getting sick of being pummeled by it over rocks/roots...which is what I mainly ride on.)

I'm thinking gold valves from racetech. Any comments or suggestions here?

Can I do it myself? How long? Special tools required? Have to be smarter than a chihuahua?
