Has anyone tried the FMF Q series muffler ? Just wondering how they are. I want the DR. D, but they don't know when they are going to produce the quiet core.

The 4Q is more quiet than the uncorked WR silencer by far - not as quiet as with the cork in. Power is still strong maybe a little down in the middle - it is hard to tell.

Just bolted it on tonight on a YZ. Around the yard it revved a little quicker and wanted to wheelie when shifting. I would say a little more low end, a noticable increase in upper mid-range to top end. It is better than I was expecting using the stock header and not extremely quiet but quiet enough.

I had the stock muffler on w/ the baffle removed, and since switching to the FMF Q with the FMF header, the bike is MUCH snappier, and I feel much better when I pass groups of hikers. I think it's a great add-on for those of us who don't live 10 miles from civilization!

Does anyone know what is quieter, the FMF Q or the wr250 stock pipe with vortip? And I don't mean according to FMF.

Mike, I dont think anything is quieter the a stocker with the vortip in, I tested my 426 with the stock/vortip combo and blew an 89db, the ranger told me that that was a record for the bike. I've heard that the FMF unit isnt as quiet as it should be.

Thanks Dan. OK I am convinced. DrD does not seem to be making any headway on their quiet muffler, so I guess I need to go vortip for those enduros with sound tests. I hate having to change pipes for this though, it is so eay to get exhaust leaks. So where is the best place to mail order the vortip nowadays?

The vortip is made so you don't have to replace the stock pipe. And it is cheaper. But the FMF Q will save weight and increase HP.
But for the price, the vortip does a great job.

mike,
what about putting a vortip in a Dr.D pipe?
then take the vortip off for non-enduro use.

so does this mean it (the FMF) won't pass an enduro sound test?

SUnruh: Steve, I was just thinking how disappointed I was with the DrD quiet core. But perhaps you have a point, that does not mean the vortip will be as bad in the DrD. I have not seen a vortip up close, how hard do you think it would be to make an adapter? Does the vortip replace the stock baffle, ie one screw?

I had asked for the O.D. of the Vortip for the same reason, but no one ever posted it. I want to try it in my E Series.

mike,
what do you mean by "bad"?
i've seen a vortip up close. looks like it just slips in and has a set screw to hold it in place. if my memory is correct.
i think you could take the end cap off the DrD pipe and slip the vortip inside and bolt it in. this is just a guess, however.

yes, i wish doug had a enduro legal insert for his fantastic pipe. i'd be on that like a duck on a june bug. :)

I mean the DrD pipe with the quiet core insert is bad. My WR with the DrD pipe with the quiet core installed runs like crap. I realize the quiet core was designed for the PC T4, not by Doug D. PC just makes his pipe. He did not even try the quiet core out until much later, when he realized that alot of us were interested in his pipe for things besides MX.

I also have a T4 and when I put the quiet core in the bike will barely move forward and takes all the fun out of it. I was also thinking of putting the Vortip in my T4 but it looks like it would take some serious machining. Has anyone done this??
