Scotts steering damper

Recommended Posts

There has to be another way to do this. I've got a secondhand '02 YZ426 I'm concidering buying that came with a Scotts damper in a box of other goodies with the bike but not attached. The previous owner had removed it for MX after quitting woods riding. It had been attached on top of the triple clamp but he apparently had to bend the crossbar up in order to fit the unit and have use of it's knobs. Shouldn't it have fit without doing that to the handlebar? I looked at pictures on Scotts website showing a damper mounted on a 426 and the little knobs were forward of the crossbar. I'd like a 1 1/8 dia. handlebar without crossbar but it's set up for 7/8 in. already. Any thoughts on this delema? Was it maybe the wrong model damper to begin with?

In normal mounting with 7/8 bars with the mount welded/bolted to the steering head, the crossbar will often need to be bent (been there, done that). The pic on the Scotts site may be the inverted mount (ie the damper arm is mounted backwards). Or they are just using a real tall bar set (doubt that as I had to bend the bar with Jimmy Button highs, one of the tallest available).

Your solution is either to ask the owner how he had it mounted and repeat that mounting. Or buy the Scotts lower triple clamp mount kit and buy standard protaper style bar mounts (and the bar). Or you can buy an applied or Scotts triple clamp and the scotts upper bar mount clamp kit.

Personally, I like the lower triple clamp mount as it 1.) eliminates the need to purchase a special upper triple clamp (in my case, allowed me to use my choice of clamps -GYTR and the trick upper clamp handguard mounts) and 2.) It removes he potential for your chest/neck/face from being slammed into the damper knobs which frankly is going to hurt like heck and possibly breaking a rib. Also 3.) It appears stronger than clamp and weld-on front mounted mounts.

Scotts is a great company to work with...call them and talk about what parts you do and don't have. They will recommend the best solution for your needs and price point.

I think turning the damper around is your best bet. It will clear any crossbar w/ no other mods this way, and your crossbar pad should fit also.

I don't know why more people don't run them like this...

I just tried your suggestion but it's not possible on mine. First of all the knobs are directly over the mount so even if you could rotate it 180 deg. you'd be no better off. Plus the way the damper mount is notched for the pivot arm it won't allow you to do this either. ?

If you want to keep the dampner your going to have to do 1 of 2 things. Either upgrade the Top Clamp to accept Fat Bars/Protapers ect and get the proper top mount, or consider getting the new fender mount kit for the unit.

Other than that all you can do is bend the crossbar.

Bonzai ?
