Hey guys I am looking to by a new kick starter. The stock one is pretty chewed up. Also would I need to get new foot pegs to stop this new kick starter? and while I at it I would like to replace the rear brake fin, any ideas.

My kick starter is getting really chewed up, too. I know BBR makes a super deluxe one, but it's around $170 or so. Makes me wonder, though, how long that one will stay super deluxe until the peg chews it apart...

I'd say go with DH Racing for the rear shark fin and BBR for the kick starter.

Tig weld the stop on your foot peg to make it wider extending it in towards the engine. The stop on my peg is probably three times its original width now. Then, bolt a piece of 1/4 inch thick conveyor belt material to the back side of your peg to cover the stop area. If done properly, it won't interfere with the folding of the peg. I installed a new kickstart lever back in February and still looks like new without a scratch on it!

I started out chewing up my kick-starter lever and thought I'd be replacing it. Then I learned how to kick-start without ever touching the footpeg. It's all in the technique (not saying I have much). What I do, though, is lean forward way over the gas tank and kick back more instead of down...my foot rarely goes down far enough for the lever to hit the peg. YMMV. Wride.

Yeah, I pretty much avoid hitting the stop too anymore. I usually start it without ever lifting my butt off the seat. It is really that easy once you learn how and have everything (fuel screw) adjusted correctly.

However, my lever did not line up with the stop on the peg as delivered. If you hit bottom when kicking, the lever stuck down. When I replaced the lever, the new one lined up perfectly with the stop on the peg.

The design intent was for the lever to come in contact with the peg and if they line up correctly there is no problem. Obviously, there is variation from lever to lever and/or bike to bike. A rider should not have to develop a special starting routine to compensate for a lack of control during the manufacturing process for the lever.

I experienced the same problem with my bike from day one. Since the bike was still under warranty, they replaced the kicker with a BBR piece, free of charge (of course, BBR hadn't got their replacement lever to market yet, so I had to wait about a month and a half). The BBR lever is a stout piece, and a bit shorter (which I really like), but the finish was less than up to their usual standards, and it's still chewing itself to bits on the odd occasion that I stuff it into the footpeg.

I installed the Pro-Tek and basically solved my hot starting problems. Instructions have you bend the #3 rear footpeg tooth in (use Vice grips with electrical tape on teeth) so it doesn't chew up the kickstarter. Seems to work, but I agree with others that if you modify your kicking technique you can avoid the problem altogether.
