you think i will dissapointed with the power output of a wr250f coming of a yz250 2smoker.
i've heard there will be a noticeable loss in hp with the change

you will have to work on the wr to get it to the point where it does have a sh@tload of power. you take a 125 two stroke and then take that power from the high end and then put it all over (from low to midrange to high) you will have that kind of power, in fact, you could have a CR125 for lunch on a wr properly configured

say that ten times fast :)

The 250F will definitely not have the peak horsepower of a 250 2 stroke. It will have more bottom end than a MXr and rev comfortably much higher. It likes to be revved high.

IMO - To be competitive on it you would have to take advantage of the wide RPM range of power it has. In a sense, once you get going, pick a gear and stick with it as much as possible - clutch it like a 125 rather than downshifting - rev it to the moon. Actually rev it until the rev limiter is about to kick in.

The modifications needed to make it competitive are easy (now that you have found this place) and usually only cost some of your time. Get one and start asking questions - you will find plenty in the archives too.

What you will be disapointed with is the ability to start it - at first. Trust almost everyone on the WR forums - you will get used to it and wind up thinking it is easy. It took me half an hour to get it started the first time - and now one or two kicks does it hot or cold.

socalwr,
hard to say. depends on IF you liked the power of the 2smoke or not. in a lot of situations i didn't like the explosive power that wanted to rip my arms out. however, i did like being able to wheelie over anything with the blip of the throttle and not pulling the bars.

i wouldn't really compare the wr to the yz though. the wr is heavy and may have a lot of things (lights, stand...) that you may not want. the yz250f weighs 4lbs less than the 2smoke in '01 and produces about 12 hp less.

i have yet to lose a dead engine start drag race to the first turn because of a lack of power. even against 426's and 520mxc's. the light weight is a big plus in the woods.

it will womp a 125 in almost every situation. if that is the kind of racing you want to do, then you will enjoy the bike.

get a Dr. D pipe and you'll enjoy more hp across the entire rpm range.

I'd back what SUnruh said. In stock WR form I think you'll be dissapointed. If you do all the YZ mods to it then it may work to your liking, especially with the Dr D pipe. It depends on what is most important to you. If you can sacrifice the power for something that is easy to ride, ride and ride without making you as tired then by all means do it.

The bike is not a turd by any means, it is surprising how effective it is against bigger bikes. I was racing a Grand Prix earlier this year. I was going up this STEEP 5th gear wide open up hill. I had a guy right behind me on a Husaberg 470. He DID NOT go smoking by me up the hill. I asked him after the race why he didn't pass me. He said that I got a better drive at the bottom and he faltered a little so he couldn't really gain back on me. So all the extra power that he should of had wasn't enough to make up for my better drive at the bottom.

I went from a 99 KX250 to the YZF. The only time I wish I was on the KX is going up HP hill at Washougal and on the starting line of a Vet A race. Everywhere else I'll take the 250F. One thing is for sure, ask any YZ/WR 250F owner and they will all say the same thing."This is the most fun bike I've ever ridden." For an all around do it all bike, you can't beat it!

thanks for all the advice. i think i will be adding a wr250f to my garage soon. i love the versatility of the four stroke and the weight of the 250f compared to bigger bikes, and i think i am willing to sacrifice some power. with the mods ive read about on this forum i think this bike will rock.

has anyone added an ims tank or yz tank with a new seat to their wr.

check out the july issue of Dirt Bike, they have an interesting hop up article on the wr.

thanks
Gabe

I put the TyDavis replica tank (IMS) and SDG seat. I wouldn't even ride it with the stock WR tank. The new tank & seat set-up allows you to get further up for better cornering.
