Scott's Clamp Mounting

I recently mounted my Scott's on my YZ. I am having a problem with the clamp kind of pressing down on the bearing seal. Are there any modifications that need to be done here (I have no directions)? Also the clamp twisted on me this weekend in my first enduro with this bike. It rendered the damper useless and I was really bummed. Has anyone welded the post on somewhere (old school style) or have any recomendations?

Thanks,

From memory - the clamp should rest on the steering stops, if it fits all the way down on the steering stops it will clamp onto the frame not compress the bearing seal. I didn't need to do any mods to get it to fit, but I think the directions mentioned the that a certain weld may have to be filed down to get it fit correctly.

I had a problem with it moving when I first installed it, but it was b/c it was not pressed all the down to the steering stops. Be careful tightening the allen screws, I stripped my first set.

call or email scotts, they are very helpful...

YZF-ing,

I think I understand what you are asking, but still not sure. If you are talking about the dampening post that bolts on to the frame neck and not the Scotts triple clamp, then there is a procedure in the directions that you don't have that tells you to file the the weld bead from the factory to make room for the post clamp. you should have at least 5mm clearance so you can bolt on the post cleanly - makes a big difference. If you need more I will look for the directions and scan them for you.

I have done a number of these and never run into what you are describing. I have however had to call Scott's for technical help while rebuilding dampers. They are really helpful and nice to deal with. They do these for a living and will no doubt have an immediate answer to your problem. I would not hesitate to call them. All of the contact info is at scottsperformance.com Good luck, you will really like your damper when it is working right.

Mook...I am talking about the frame clamp and I did file a little (just made sense), however the clamp then pushed on the seal and made the steering bind up.

WFO...I will call and I love the damper, I have had them for years going all the way back to the old body casting (all rounded off) prior to the machined unit sold now.

Thanks All

Sunruh:

How do you keep those 909 grips from spinning? If you glue them, what type do you use? My throttle side always spins to the opposite position you want them. I swore them off. No safety wire?

hoosierf,
i cheat!
i just death grip them to the point that they CAN'T spin! :)
i've not glued nor wired mine. i have never had a problem with it. not even in the mud/rain that i've raced in. i probably should though. after this next race i'll be changing grips in an effort to try and eliminate my blister problems.

I never had any luck with the bolt on clamps. Had one on my KLX that would flex too much and the one on the YZF is even worse......it keeps coming loose to the point that it don't do diddly. So what I did in both cases is tac weld it in place and now it works fine.

Steve doesn't have the problem I have cause he rides much SLOWER than I do. LOL

My bike hates me because I put a Honda sticker inside the airbox just to piss off my blue blooded buddy! In addition, I abuse it twice a week, whether it needs it or not. :)

Hey YZF-ing: If that Scotts is binding the steering, as in pushing the arm on the scotts damper then you better take it off untill you get the mount problem fixed. The directions state that if that arm binds it will ruin the damper. And it will. THe nylon bushing on the pin must not push against the bottom of the damper arm. Good luck. The frame mount will work if you file the frame properly. It will wallow out the mount though if you let it move around and not get it right soon. I have one on my CR250 and also on my DRZ400E. All basically the same setup. All needed to do some filing. Even my xr400 which mounts on the oil filler neck needed some filing. I think the CR250 took some 3M bearing mount to insure it stayed tight. All worth the effort though.

Victor,

I filed all the material out of the way. I think it just moved because I had it cranked WAY up and I probably did not have it on correctly. I might use a little green lock-tite (bearing version) to help hold it on. It is not binding the steering when properly secured, only when it turns around the steering neck. I remounted the whole thing and it looks better. If I have to I will weld the thing on...that's how I have done it for years.

Thanks All
