Has anyone gone through the California DMV after putting a Baja Designs kit on an '01 WR250F? I've seen guys get the WR400s through with the kits in smaller towns with less-restrictive DMVs... Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this... Thanks!

If there is a "3" or a "C" in the 8th digit of your VIN#, you are most likely SOL. Your only other option is to get the bike plated in another state and then bring it back in to CA for re-registration in 90 days. Although some have inadvertently gotten green stickers and plates for their WR, I understand that the DMV computers are now flagging the red sticker VIN#s. For bikes over 300cc, their is an easier work around by using VT to get an out of state plate through the mail. Do you know anyone in NV?

njw, you are correct about using Vermont; however, they will plate 250cc bikes too, just not title.

I sent them my Manufacturers Certificate of Origin and my bill of sale w/ reg fees. They sent me a plate and my MCO and a registration back! Real cheap and easy. No continuing property taxes. Wride.

Thanks for the VT suggestion... I've got a request in with Baja Designs (who are located in San Diego) as to how they've seen WRs get through the Sacramento computers... I'm really not that fired up about turn signals and mirrors on such a great bike, but in the Tahoe area it opens up my riding options exponentially...

Anyone else gotten through the DMV with a similar bike? And yes, my YZ400F has a 'C' in the serial number, and the WR has a '3'... that's the kiss of death with the CA DMV...

So, here's an update... The trick is that I can't get anything under 300cc legalized in CA... Which is only a partial bummer, cuz now I'll just legalize the YZ400F, trick out the WR for the trails, and use the KX on the tracks... I still have to go through Vermont with the 400, which will give me a street title through the mail, then CA will give me plates from that (assuming that I have proper equiment installed -- which I'm getting from Baja Designs). Thanks to everyone for their help!

whoa,
what is the deal with vermont? i see above, "plates but no title"?

W-ride, could you outline the steps that you took with VT DMV? we have the same problem(s) in nj with our dmv.

TahoeWR250F, take a look at the acerbis handguards that have integrated turn signals. they are really "low-profile" and won't make your yz look so much like a dual-sport.

thanks

wrooster, thanks for the tip on the handguards... i'll check 'em out. VT will send you plates for ANY bike, but for anything under 300cc, they won't title it, just send back your Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin... Since you're in NJ, you're close enough to VT to get away with keeping the VT plates... In CA, they expect us to get CA plates within a week of bringing a bike into the state, so it won't work for me bother with the WR this time around... good luck!

Go here: http://www.aot.state.vt.us/dmv/

Download the vehicle registration forms and the instruction sheet. Print'em out. Fill'em out. Calculate your fees, write a check and mail it out. Call their phone number if you have questions...they are extremely helpful and what you are doing (out of state registration) is totally legal to them.

They will want your bill of sale and Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin for a 250f (or title if the bike's already titled)but they will mail the MCO back to you for when you sell the bike (also you can sign over your vehicle on the back of the registration). Good Luck! Wride.
