Guys - any of you heard of valves getting tighter as they run in. I checked mine after about ten hours and they were spot on. I just checked them again after another ten hours and the intake valves are tighter than spec - I always thought they got looser - any clues or is this just normal?

They get tighter because after time the contact area of the valve and the seat in the head wear into each other, which makes the clearance at the cam tighter. Unless there is wear on the cam or bucket. Visualize the valve being higher up in the head.

I checked them after about 10 hrs. They were in the middle of the specs. Haven't checked them since. Had the bike since December. No idea how many hours but I have used a case and a half of oil.

Checked when new and after approx.5 hr.with no change in clearance. You need a thin (width)feeler gauge to get at the middle intake.

I have done about 300miles, one oil change, no valve clearance check.
Was planning to change oil again after next ride, maybe 50-60 miles, and then check valves at next oil change in another 300 miles,... anyone think that's leaving it too long ???

I checked mine in my 400 after two years, and around 3500 kilometres, and all five were still in spec.

You are going too long between oil changes - there is so much crap in the oil during the break in. I changed my at least 7 times in the first 300 miles, only now am I getting fairly clean oil filters and feel I can go longer between oil changes.

~450 miles. no valve check...not doing one until I hear someone had to adjust. 4 oil changes...oil is staying fairly clear and clean for a good while. she's just now broken in right!

Thanks guys - I checked mine again because I rode another yzf on the weekend and it felt a heap smoother than mine even though they are the same age with the same jetting, I asked a mechanic and he said that tight intake valves would cause this. The job takes about 25 minutes and is very easy - remove tank and seat, remove cover(2 bolts) find tdc and measure. Fixing the problem is also very simple, but does take a little fiddling around. Good luck to anyone who tries it, I have adjusted mine and it now feels a lot smoother with better power.
