when i was 16 i went from 80's to a 1993 KX250 in 2000, it was alot but i got use to it, maybe just do some power mods to you 250F is not, like pipe it for now. if ready to move up maybe get a yz426 i heard they are cheap as dirt, i was gonna look for one in spring. stay 4 stroke tho, its the new world, why go back to mixing gas? if you really wanna be cool get a old YZ250 and keep the 250F have best of both with out shelling thousands out, thats what i would do....

I've got both bikes. I love my 2-strokes. They are so much easier to handle than a 450. At first I wasnt sure but now I am selling my 250F to buy a 125.

If you can wait for the 06' 450 with the aluminum frame do that. If you can't wait, get the 05 YZ250. Coming from a 250f you'll probably adapt to the 450 better.

The new 2005 YZ450F is alot easier to ride than previous years. I would say go with that, but it would definitely help if you rode a YZ250 first. The old YZ450F (03-04) was a grunt monster, the thing could throw off a very experienced dirt rider...but the new one hits like a big-bore YZ400F...Yamaha realized most people were buying Honda's 450 because of how much easier it was to ride, it didn't jar you around and put out so much brute horsepower that you were tired after 10 minutes on the track.

They fixed that problem for 2005, in short...the new 450F rides more like a Honda, but still makes the class-leading power we know of a Yamaha. And no valve problems!

My next door neighbor bought his 10 year old boy a used XR-75 for his first bike
The kid had riden friends mini bikes (lawn mower motors ) and kinda figured it out
well three months later the dad brings home a new YZ 100........It took Junior
twenty minutes before they had to take him to the Hospital with a broken
collar bone.....Wasn't funny then but kinda funny now because I told the dad
he wasn't ready yet......Like Dick Mann used to tell me all the time.....
BC can you ride that 250 Ducati wide open all the way around the track? I said well no I can't.......his answer.....Then why do need a faster bike?

BC

I think you should have to ride a 1973 Suzuki TS 185 like I did when I was seventeen. The problem with you damn kids these days is you're all spoiled. I also think you should have to walk five miles through the snow to get to school and watch TV on a 13" black and whilte TV that gets really bad reception. If you're smart to follow all this sage advice I'm giving you for free, you will grow to be old, fat, slow and grumpy just like me.

We had a ball on those old bikes!

On nice days I used to commute on a KX400 and and park it in the bicycle rack in high school.

With the testosterone your 17 year old goulies are pumpin out you should definitely be on a 250. Testosterone + adolescence + 450F = Hospital.
