Getting New XR650R, need help

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm trading in my 2001 wr426 for on 05 XR650R.

Yeah, a bit or weight difference but I'm 250lb and do strongman/pwr lifting so an xr650 isn't gonna be a big change over a 426 for muscling it around. Im 6'4" so the seat height on the WR is perfect but the honda is lower. Can I lower the footpegs any, or maybe increase seat foam? And the bars are low, can I add a spacer or something to raise them?

I plan on doing the usual power-up mods, 68s pilot, 175 main, restrictors out, uni filter, exhaust tip, and intake manifold. Shound I use a different needle, or just raise the stock one 1 notch? Hopefully this will put me to the same acceleration as the wr with less revs and more reliability.

Oh, whats with the stock carb mod to decrease hesitation ( air jet cutoff valve) does this work? And I'm keeping the stock carb on it.

Anything else I should know? More tips for more power? stock exhaust with cut out baffel or racing baffel? aftermarket pipe? (sound is no object where I go, and I love a deep sounding bike) I do mostly trail riding and plenty of dirt roads. I saw the brp weak points on the pig pen site.

Hopefully this will get some replys. I have searched lots but still have these questions. Thanks. ?

When I uncorked mine I just used the stock needle in the 4th position. The bike ran great after being uncorked but starting was still a pain in the ass if the bike flooded. Bought the Edelbrock and it is the shiznit. Starts 1st or 2nd kick even after flooding. I know you want to keep the stock carb but the Edelbrock is worth it. The stock exhaust is hard to beat but check out the Moriwaki exhaust. There are a few guys running it and it looks great. Not sure about bars for your height but I'm 6'2" and run Pro Taper not sure what bend (CR Low or Mid) with universal mounts and I could use a little more height. Check out the right foot peg mod because there have been a few post on here about them breaking off.

The stock carb has no hesitation from what I have found and I've never been able to tell what these folks are talking about regarding the hesitation. Your plans as far as jetting are right on and I would also recommend opening up your side panel for more air. The stock carb jetting and float level set right works just fine. The only reason I am stilll thinking about dropping the cash for the eldelbrock is for the starting once you drop it on the side of the hill. With the proper clean out drill it isn't to bad but it is always fun to buy a new goodie for the bike ?

Yeah, do the usual uncorking procedure, as you already know about, and then you can use either the stock needle, lifted to the 4th position, or get the B3E needle and use the 3rd position.

It really helps to drill the side paned for more air, and use the highest quality fuel you can. I use a 50/50 mix of super unleaded to avgas 100LL. The high octane mix works great with the airbox/sidepanel drilled out with numerous small holes for increased air intake.

Now, uncorked/jetted, and considering your size, the 650R should be faster than the WR. I say this because I used to own a YZ426, and now I own an XR650R, which is uncorked/jetted. It's difficult to say if the 650R is quicker than the 426 was. Both are very powerful. But a very honest opinion is that my XR650R produces more power on the low end and midrange, but less on the top end, than the YZ or WR. As far as top speed, the XR wins, no problem. My 426 would hit 94.6mph measured by gps. The same gps measured my XR650R at 102mph. Level ground, no wind, tucked down, stock gearing both bikes.

Oh yeah, I also have a KX500 which run away from either of those four-strokes (up to about 80mph anyway).

LL.

Any taller seat will help. I'm 6'5" and run with the Guts Racing. I know SDG makes one as well as Baja Designs. I wouldn't lower the pegs but I would invest 60 bucks and get the IMS wide pegs, wayyyyyy more comfy than the stockers. You're gonna want to get an aftermarket top triple clamp to get you in the right position. I used a lot of different bars trying to get comfortable and finally bit the bullet and got some Fasst bars---they are so nice! I haven't gotten arm pump since I've had them! Have fun! ?

thanks for the replys, I can't wait! I might even trade tomorrow. Real bummer though cause I won't be able to drive it much till spring, (nova scotia winter weather) but I'll have lots of time to grease it and coustomize it. Thanks again for the replys. You guys here at thumpertalk are so much more helpfull than some people on certian 4-wheeler forums.

Does honda have heavier springs, or go aftermarket? I don't race or anything but will I still need them for average trail riding? I'm gonna change the fork oil I know cause i've heard it's comparablr to "whale snot" yummm, whale snot! ?

oh, and for the bar raisers, who makes them? When I get the bike I might even be able to make something myself.

Went to the dealer today to trade, but they were closed, death in family. So, It will be next saturday before I can trade ? drove 45min each way. but The 650 looked nice in the window ?

The chart at the bottom of this page, http://www.borynack.com/Bruce/XR650R/xr650r.htm , is a little different than the one on the Race Tech page and probably a bit more realistic. It doesn't matter if you race or not. Having the proper springs will allow the suspension to work as it should. In Canada springs are about $150 for the front or rear. Aftermarket is the only option.

I couldn't find much on the bar risers on the internet. This link, http://www.zianet.com/GenMar/ will give an idea what they look like. The ones on this link marked 1" up and 1 3/8" back will also work in the forward position. You could have someone with a michine shop make these for you.

And I'm keeping the stock carb on it.

Why?? The Edelbrock QuickSilver was BY FAR the best mod I have done to mine. I wouldn't even consider going back. I let one friend of mine with a BRP and stock carb ride mine and he ordered his own the next week.

If it's just a money thing, I'd suggest looking for a leftover '03 or '04, for less money, to leave you with enough to buy the QS. Or buy a good used BRP and save TONS o' cash.

Whats the difference besides the starting? I'm trying to get a leftover 04.

Checked the mail today and had a box at my door from BD. Had my skid plate and jet kit. Skid plate appears to be of very good quality and looks much better than the stocker. Just 1 ???, has anyone ever encountered the mounting bolts backing out after riding for a while? Just wondering if its worth some blue loctite or not. As for the jetting...what an easy carb to work on. Put the B53E needle (clip 3) and seat in, a 172 main jet, intake boot, derestricted the airbox, and drilled out the tip. After a few kicks to refill the float bowl, the piggy started right up. I could immediately sense the bike was running like it had taken its asthma medicine! Motor no longer hunted or spiked when throttle cracked @ idle. Then the test ride. Massive difference in power. Roll-on, down low, high in the rev range....it just felt linear and the bike just dug in. I crapped myself having nailed jetting of the bat. This just doen't happen with me and carbs. Needless to say, I am very happy with the motor. I'll be setting sag and hopefully fiddling around with C&R settings when I hit the trails. So far so good.....?

If the bike is stock, before fudging with the clickers, do yourself a favor and drain the stock "oil"/bubble gum outta the forks and replace it with some new stuff. You'll see why I stress this when you get around to doing it.

Geoff

Yeah, I read that somewhere, what do I replace it with though? and the quantity, Can I adjust the amount for my weight?

You guys have been very helpfull. So, here's what I'll do when I go to get it hopefully this saturday: Uncorking mods, handlebar risers, locktite varrious bolts, maybe stiffer rear spring, change fork oil, and maybe change thermostat. am I forgetting something?

I can hardly wait to feel the big torque and roll on power! ?

I went through and read all the posts for the third time. I know in California I can get a 2003 XR650R for $4700 OTD L.A. Honda or my favorit is John Burrs Cycles in Fontana. It sould be close to this if you can find a 03' in your aera but, you might have to leave the price you are willing to pay with you phone number and walk out the door...they will call ?

Sounds like you have been reading but, If you missed the Pig Pen then it would be a great idea to read that whole site: http://www.xr650r.us/ The FAQ and the trouble spots is a must read.

http://www.borynack.com/Bruce/XR650R/xr650r.htm

My site is more about suspension and looking for all the power you can get out of the XR650R and still keep it bullet proof.

I have to push my site because it has taken so much of my time. I am just soooo full of myself ? There is a lot about the suspension and it is all free no strings attached.....nothing to sell and no money made by addvertizing......Just a site to help you get the most out of your BRP
