what does the ais do and can i run with out it?

The AIS (Air Injector System) on the 2005 WR450 is a "smog control" device that uses vacuum pressure to power a pump that pulls fresh air from the air box and injects it into the exhaust at the head pipe. You CAN run without it and I WILL run without it. I have been working with some different tubing plugs etc. trying to cap the fittings off clean. The problem is, the fittings are pressed into the head. So you can't just remove them and thread in a plug. I have worked on possibly welding the fittings closed also. The rumor mill around here has Baja Designs puting out a AIS blocking kit for this bike. That might be nice. Here is the big news for all you '05ers out there. I posted this in reguards to my own new bike posts recently, but for those that didn't see it: The bike backfires pretty bad on decel with the AIS in place. I revved the bike while pinching the AIS hose that conects the pump to the tube that runs to the head pipe. THE BACKFIRE STOPPED! So I shoved a cork in the hose, ziptied it to for a good seal and, voila! It blocks the circuit and acts as though the system is no longer in place. Now, I still want to huck the thing for reasons of weight and aesthetics, but I will wait to do it CLEAN, I like clean. Get a cork bottle stopper or a dowel or, whatever and block it. It is not going to kill the rain forests.....it will make your bike run better though and as my friend Martha Stewart says...."It's a good thing"...

It sounds like you have a good thing going with the cork helping eliminate the backfire.

I do have a thought though. By the way I am no expert. However, it seems that the AIS system on the 450 would be taking some of the exhaust gases and injecting them into the airbox rather than from the airbox. This would help with reducing some of the HC emissions by reintroducing them back to the combustion cycle.

Just a thought. What do you think?

Its the same as a smog pump on a car.It pumps fresh air into the exhaust port.

I blocked off the ais. frist I worked out the 90 degree insert in the motor took it to a friends cnc machine shop he made a perfect fitting plug made just like factory. taped it back in the motor used a rubber plug on the airbox with rtv.

had to do it to run a IMS tank. bike runs great. also sent stock plug to baja design so they will hopefully make a kit to help all future buyers of the wr450. ?

Burr, first off...that's awsome. Hope it works out for you. Maybe since YOU are in Riverside (and I assume you are talking about Riverside California) and I am in Riverside....we can swap ideas (read: I STEAL YOUR IDEA ? )Second, I hope you mean you tapped it back in and not TAPED it in!! If the tape comes of you are screwed. (Just messing with you, I know you meant tapped). One more thing. I have an IMS tank on my '05. It fit so I don't know why I keep getting calls and e-mail asking me if I in fact have an IMS or if I airbrushed one on in my photos!! ? The secret is, take a rubber mallet and tap lightly on the tubing that hangs the tank up slightly and tap it down just a bit so it clears the tank. I am still going to chuck that AIS into the sea soon. Well maybe not the sea. That would not be eco-friendly.

I'm picking up my 05' in a few days and one of my concerns is te AIS. Here's what I know(or at least think I know):

1)The AIS was only supposed to be on California models. Bikes in other states

were not supposed to have the AIS.

2) I live in Washington state and was at a dealer recently eyeballing the 05'.

On the right side of the cylinder head, I noticed a sizable tube which, after

looking at photos on thumpertalk, I now recognize as the AIS.

Was this bike a california model misplaced in Washington state by accident? Or is the AIS, in fact, on all the 05' WR450's?

Keep the dialogue going guys........this is important, useful information! I am very interested in Baja design's potential "cure" to this and when(if) it arrives on the market, give us all a heads up.

i bought my bike in arizona and it has the ais. i did put a cork in it and it does the job, no backfire on decel. thanks for all the help!!
