What is the deal with changing the cam to a 450 cam? Is there something about the cam that allows the bike to start without needing the compression release or is it still needed?

Yeah, a '03 450 cam (or newer) has an "auto-decompression" feature to it that allows you to kick the bike like a 2 stroke.

Well worth the time/effort/money.
