9300 miles on the bike and yesterday morning the speedometer stopped working. So I checked out the cabel and sure enough it was broken in two right about the level where it curves around the right fork. It look like it sheared inside the plasic without any external damage.

Can I get a replacemnet steel cable and feed it down or do I need to buy a whole new cable and harness?

If your bike is an XR650L, replacing the speedo cable is cheap and easy. Buy the whole cable.
