Have there been any 450 tranny problems, in comparison to 426?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if the 450's have had their trannies beefed up from what the 426's had, since a few 426's had some problems. Comparing part numbers they upgraded several of the gears, but most everything may retrofit in the 426(A couple 426 part #'s are even reto-ed to 450 #'s). The only part that I question is the updated primary input shaft, that may be different due to the newer design clutch.

Just to clarify, I'm refering to the 450 part that may not work in a 426. I would like to know if all the other parts would work though since the two bikes use the same output shaft. If the total width and spline size and tooth count is the same on the input shaft, and the shift forks are positioned the same everything should work. ?

Only the bikes with Auto clutches that are set up to engage to harshly. ? Transmission is very solid on the WR450. 3rd gear may be the weakest gear from the guys with auto clutches.?

OK Indy... Do you know something I don't?? ?

I've got 4,800 miles of auto-clutch use on my tranny and I haven't had any issues! ? ?

when i was figuring out how to set mine up the first time,i wanted quick engagement,so i decided with the 5 tc balls and the light spring. well al and the boys at rekluse verified that this would produce the results i was looking for but it was not reccomended,so after trying to figure out why(they just kept up with there would be other issues)i never really came back from the conversation with it'll work but.....what? so i went ahead and did it anyway(sort of a school of hard knocks thing i got goin on)and with the 5 tc balls and the light spring it was perfect, instant but still auto. so i thought well theres nuthin wrong with this? well after a HS race and some other hard rides i noticed an increased amount of slop in the drivetrain that was continually getting worse and it was being amplified by the harsh engagement of the clutch! so i went right to the heavy spring and it straightened out (caught it in time i believe) now the engagement is still right there but way mellower on the drivetrain. on the yz's this problem is even greater because of their faster spinning primary gear(03-04 anyway)now i might of paid more attention if they mentioned transmission damage but they tip toed around it(didn't want to scare me i guess.) so after doing some more research this was a common problem with the earlier generation clutches of this type, and doing what i did at first was reversing the fix back to the problem days(to tight of engagement too fast)so you just gotta listen some times even if no reasonable answer is given as to why? ?(ya,right ?) ?
