has anyone any experience of converting a early xr6 to rear disc and single carb

Sell it, and buy something newer that has what you want.
Conversions are NOT cheap, and you take a loss if and when you sell it.

Oh yeah, my 628 d.s. is for sale.
How bout that!

Definately not worth the cost and effort. Converting to a single carb would require buying a new cylinder head, carb and airbox. Going to rear disc brake would require a new swingarm, brake system, and some fabrication on the frame.
