94 XR650L Sprocket reccomendation

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a 94 XR650L w/XR's only pipe, jetting etc...

I want to play with the sprocket gearing and I am looking for suggestions. Sould I go with 13 front and 45 rear or 14 front and 48 rear or something different? The result would be about the same on paper but I would like to draw upon your experience.

I am also looking to add a tach. any reccomendations?

Thanks

Theoretically the larger the sprockets the easier it is on your chain. I would lean toward 14/48 or even 14/45 as mentioned above. I have 13/48 on my 600 and sometimes I wish it had more top end. Accelerates like a motocrosser and idles along at a walking pace, though.

A non-digital tach you might look at is one Autometer makes for Jr Dragsters. Its meant to be used on a single cylinder Briggs & Stratton type engine, although its not very small and may be meant for breaker-type ignition.

I think it depends on what you have in mind.

I went to a 5.10x18 rear tire which made the stock 15/45 gearing too tall, so I went to 14/45. It's great around town and in the mountains but it buzzes a bit too much at 65-70 mph. I'm going to try 15/47 next.

One tooth change on the front equals about 3.5 on the back. A 47 tooth rear sprocket would allow you to try smaller, in between ratios than a 48. A 48 is almost like changing the front another tooth.

Will a 48 rear work w/ the stock chain guide?
