Would you pay more for a street legal bike?

I've currently got my bike on the butcher block and wondering if it's reasonable to ask for more since it's plated. I'm the last person to try to "take" someone and want to be fair. Any opinions are appreciated...productive ones of course ?

Are you kidding me? This is America where the market sets the price. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it. If someone will pay more for a street lighted and licensed bike then by all means go for it. If not then it won't sell. If you find a buyer who won't pay the asking price then you can always give him a deal.

Here in So Cal where the DMV will no longer plate converted off-road scooters, it's pretty easy to command a $400-$500 premium for a bike that's dual registered (plate and green sticker) After looking around for about 6 months for a plated 426, I ended up paying about $425 above "market price" for mine with a current license plate, and thought I got a good deal.

I know about how prices are set and supply and demand. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to ask such a question. There's always some chump that has to flex their muscles in every post. Thanks for your economics 101 lesson but I don't need it ?

It kind of depends on your state. If you live in a state where it's easy to D/S a bike, then I don't think you could really fetch more than the bike and it's accessories are worth. However, I just encountered this myself. I had a Wisconsing plated WR426, I bought a WR 450 to replace it. Wisconsin refused to plate my 450 due to new "restrictions" on off road conversions. I had two bikes, the new one that I wanted but couln't plate, and the old bike with a plate, but needed to go away. I finally got my 450 Michigan plated, and sold my 426 to a buddy for cheap.

I had originally planned on getting a little above and beyond what an unplated 426 would get.

Get what you can, these babies aren't getting any cheaper, or easier to plate.

P.S. I don't think Diesel was giving you any crap, just some advice. mmmmmmeeeelllllooooowwww. ?

I wasnt trying to be a pr!ck but I realize the economics stuff and that's not where I was trying to go. It was early, still is, and I'm slowly getting my coffee down. Point taken. My bad, sorry.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm in Oregon so it's about as easy as it gets to plate a bike. The only real overhead was getting the 'extras' on the bike and throwing some DOTs on it. Looking in CycleTrader I notice there arent any 450's for sale in my area so it seems like a definate sellers market. The other thing is Washington folks don't have it as easy so they are always trying to get into the Oregon side for legal bikes. We'll see. Thanks again. ?

I'd advertise it in www.traderonline.com cycle trader and ask a good price for it if it's in good shape. This way you'll hit the WA market. Not very many '04s for sale, let alone dual-sported. I know, I been watching. I finally gave up and bought a Canadian new '04, and a BajaDesigns kit and now have almost $6000 +tax into it. I would think starting at low/mid 5K somewhere would be reasonable. I know as a buyer I would have called you.

Remember though, Free advise is worth exactly what you pay for it! ?

Thanks Diesel. I appreciate the feedback hopefully I don't look like too much of an a$$. My plan was to advertise on TT and then move onto CycleTrader. We'll see..
