I agree. There are still tons of 600's out there thumpin' around. They are tough as nails and run forever. Thanks for helping to build-out this forum. The 650 posts have been very light for some time. Hopefully this will make the forum more active. :)

Yes I have the XR600r 2000 I love it raw power in the woods I have been going out everyweekend and the machine just keeps on suprising me. I had spoken with a friend of mine about a pipe and header he had requested the quite core pipe any comments on this subject. I have awsome bottom end but need alittle more top end but i do sometime travel on the street to get to riding so bike has to be sorta quiet but i still want the extra horses

Is it true XR6's are so reliable that Honda thought about fitting a tow hook on the back so your mates on lesser brand bikes could come riding with you and make it home?

I recently purchased a 94 xr600...it has a pipe and a baja designs kit, otherwise all stock...it runs great, but I have some questions.
1. How do I know when it needs a tune up
2. What type of oil do you suggest I use?
3. When do the valves need to be adjusted?
4. What type of tool kit should I buy for baja riding?

I'm new at this, so any help would be appreciated

Jamul, I had a 600 for 3 years and put 25000 miles on it. 15000 in Baja.

Tool kit I carried
Cut down 24mm, 17mm, 12mm, 10mm, 8mm, adjustable wrench, 4,5,6mm allen wrench. screw drivers +-, tire irons, small vice grips, feeler gauges, plug wrench, bike pump.

Spare Parts
Front and rear tubs, levers and purch, master link, clutch cable (used), epoxy puddy, small tow rope, hardware, spark plug.

Gearing
Baja 14/45 Top speed 93MPH
Trails 13/48 Adds tons of HP, Top speed ~75MPH

I only used Honda 20/50 or Spectrol 20/50 and changed it all the time, filter every two times.

I adjusted the valves before every big ride or 500 miles. If the valves stayed set I would check them every other ride unless I could here them making noise.

The biggest HP improvment I made to the stock bike was lowering the gearing for the trails and octang booster. In the summer I ran 95+ using Lead octang boost. I pick it up at car crafters. You could use VP red race gas and mix it 50/50. In the winter 92+ is good enough. Get a good pipe and air cleaner and do the jetting. I liked White Bros. The FMF worked better but needed more jetting work.

As far as a tune-up goes I replaced the spark plug when ever starting the bike was a problem.

The biggest problem I had with the 600 was the choke plate. It broke apart in Baja and went inside the motor and took out my piston and intake valve. I had to be towed 63 miles back to the support truck. So after that I took a mirror and flash light and checked it everytime I cleaned my air filter. It was a $2000 repair bill but Honda covered it.

Jamul, I think you got lots of good advice on this one already. For Oil I have always been partial to the Mobil 1 for this bike. My Cams lasted well and seldom did I need to reset the rockers/valve lash. Team Honda used it in Bubba Shoebert's bikes.

1. just do it periodically, get into a schedule of when you think it needs to be done.
2.15W-50 is a good weight oil, doesn't let the bike get too hot when sitting and idling.
3.depending on how much and how hard you ride the bike. I ride hard and check them once or twice a year. its not hard to do so why not be safe about it.

I would check/change the oil,
check/change the air filter,
check valve clearances,
check/lube chain and sprockets,

I guess go over the whole bike and familiarize yourself a little
