Thats cool Rich ? It may have sounded like I was doubting your claim before but I wasn't. I was just offering what I know about these style pipes from a production standpoint. I would never doubt anything you say because I know you know a lot about these bikes and especially what works and what doesn't :awww:. I think its really cool that you are experimenting with different designs. Tryce mentioned to me that he is getting more power out of his new setup on his YZF than he has gotten from any pipe. He was running the Yosh header/ST endcan but now he is using the Leo Vince titanium header with the ST endcan and says it is really amazing

Why don't the big name companies put that much research and experimentation into designing pipes that REALLY work?

Because alot of people are blinded by the almighty sight of an FMF, Pro Circuit, etc pipe and think it trasnlates into mondo HP gains when for the most part, all your paying for is a shinny pipe with brand name! Why make parts that work well, when people will buy your stuff cuz your neighbor has one on his bike and it looks cool! ?

No sweat. I certainly didn't take it that way.

I've seen similar good results using tapered and/or stepped head pipes from various companies and even a few I've made up connected to a meg rear section. The trick is finding the proper balance between the cam overlap and TDC breathing characteristics of the engine and the meg characteristics. A meg diffuser angle and area ratio that works with one combination may not work the same with a different cam or cylinder head. I've found that as you make a change to the breathing of the engine you change what the optimum meg shape and head pipe will need to be. My guess is Tryce is seeing similar things in his testing. The "best" pipe seems to be a moving target, but I guess that's what keep this interesting. :awww: I just wish there was more time and money available to test more combinations.

Add another vote for the Thunder Alley pipe as one of the real bargins in terms of performance for the dollar.

On both my '01 YZF and '03 CRF the pipe I bought from Bob worked well and fit perfectly (not at all a given in my experience). I don't know squat about exhaust design but there is something about Bob's reverse meg design that Rich is talking (over my head) about in this thread that really works. It gives a big, but smooth & broad punch of power in the lower and mid range, but still revs out well.

Both pipes I purchased from Bob had a Krizman (sp?) sparky and I believe this makes them quieter. On both my YZF and CRF Bob's pipe w/ the sparky insert was only very slightly louder than stock. Much quieter than any other aftermarket I've heard on either bike, but the power delivery was improved over stock in both cases.

Agreed! I had an FMF PowerCore IV before my TA, and my TA is quiter, sounds better, and gives better power than the FMF did. The TA with sparky has a different sound to it than most pipes, but it's a good sound.
