'02 WR426 For Jumping?

Recommended Posts

I am 6'03" and 205lbs Will this bike take some mediocre punishment as far as MX style jumps go? Ive taken it off "natural style" jumps, like dunes and sinkholes, but is it possible to make it jump like the YZF of that year without breaking the bank? If at all possible, could someone please recommend changes that would be necessary for light motocrossing? If anyone has done this, could they include their settings for suspension, like the clicks on the rebound and compression rates?

Thanks!

Eric

I would try and find some stock YZF fork springs and shock spring (eBay?), and give them a go. You would need the YZ426 4.6 fork springs, and the 5.4 shock spring. With those spring rates, it should still be good when trail riding, but more than adequate for the odd day at the MX track. Clicker settings etc would be down to the individual bike. Just set your sag, then start with the adjustments. Make sure to keep notes on what you've changed, so it's easier to look back on. ?

I'd recommend 0.48 up front and 5.8 on the rear. I'm 6'4" and 200lbs and have a 5.8 in the rear of my 01 and love it ?. Havent done the front as I'm happy with the way it works, but the rear was terrible with the stock spring. I also tried a 5.4 but it wasnt much better. As for the clickers I havent touched the rears since I got the shock back from rebuilding and havent touched the fronts since I put the new trippletree on (too hard basket). I know I'm lazy, but it works for me so why mess with it. I've riden on one MX track but that was with the stock rear spring and it was kicking like a raging bull

I'm not expert when it comes to jumps , and go on the theory 'I've gotta be able to go to work on moinday' when contemplating how hard to go. On little jumps like this my WR lands so softly you dont barely know you were in the air.

Eric,

The WR is definately a capable jumper indeed. I weigh 170 so at your weight, you will need to beef up the front and rear a bit. Set it stiff for big jumps and soft for trails. I have punished my WR to no end and it is doing GREAT! Good Luck.............db

This may not apply to you but I removed all of my WR accessories from my wr 450. running with 1 gal of fuel it is now 30 lbs lighter. The suspension was too soft before. now it is alot stiffer and takes jumps better. Anything you do to lighten your bike will help.
