2-strokes

Recommended Posts

2-strokes are dying a slow death. 4-strokes are so much better! A lot less maintenance! 4-strokes can be raced or trail ridden without no modifications! 4-strokes are not as loud as 2-strokes. 2-strokes you have to ride hard. 4-strokes you can ride fast or slow low rpm mid rpm or high rpm. 2-strokes have a powerband. 4-strokes don't! About the only thing a 2-stroke has on a 4-stroke is that it is lighter. 2-strokes you have to scream at high rpms! ?

I would bet that your only experience of "2 strokes" is the two you do in the bathroom, whilst reading a copy of your mammas underwear catalogue!

Maintenance: Don't be naive. A race-bred 4-stroke (ie. YZ and WR) requires just as much maintenance as a 2-stroke. You need to change the oil frequently, and keep an eye on your valve clearances, or you end up paying for it in the long run.

Loud: With open pipes, 4-strokes are way louder then 2-strokes. Think about it. A 4-strokes fuel explosion(where the power & the noise comes from) has to be twice as big as a 2-stroke because of the design of the motor. 4 vs. 2. You want further proof. Stand at the starting gate of a MX race that has 4-strokes and 2-strokes mixed together. When all them bikes take off, I guarentee that you'll have a hard time trying to hear a 2-stroke in that mix.

Powerbands: 4-strokes do have powerbands. There just not as noticable as 2-strokes. Also you need bigger motors (450) and more rpms (10K) to notice them.

Not trying to rain on your parade. Just thought you should be informed. ?

That sounds good to me! ? But I am talking about stock dirtbikes. Try riding a 2-stroke on tight trails! :awww: If 4-strokes have a powerband then I don't notice it! Because my WR have power everywhere! If you get into low rpms on a 2-stroke your power is gone until you can get back on the powerband. Can you putt around on a 2-stroke, I don't think so. You have to be on or off the throttle on a 2-stroke! On a 4-stroke you can ride it however you want to ride it period. You have to mix the oil and gas for the 2-stroke dirtbikes. You have to check and change the spark plug very often! 2-strokes pollute a lot more than 4-strokes do! I keep reading in dirtbike magazines that 4-strokes will soon be taking over!

2-strokes make pretty good woods weapons if you ask me. Light and quick. I can putt around on my 2-stroke trials bike (I hope you know what that is) all day long if I want. You don't have to be on or off on the throttle. Has More low end pop than a 4-stroke. No real "powerband" either.

Dude you should try the new powerband made by Poweroll They make one specically for our WRs. It's even adjustable. It doesn't take away from the low or top end at all it just adds tons of power to where ever you set it. You can adjust it to give you more low end torque or set it for more top end HP!

I've got one on mine and believe me it is the best mod I have ever seen.

Oh by the way the manual for the Powroll Powerband says to use 40 wt synthetic but I prefer 20 wt blinker fluid. Man it really performs with that stuff in it!!!! ?

I have both so can offer a objective opinion:

2 stroke: a well tuned 250 has plenty of torque under powerband for trail riding. My old 250 will wheelie off the throttle from low revs in 4th. Low maintainance, but needs regular piston/rod replacement.

4 stroke:easier to start, doesnt sprinkle the back of your new jersey with oil stains, awesome power everywhere. In the wrong gear?? doesnt matter just gas it! Higher maintainance required, but doesnt eat parts like the 2 stroke does.

I think the 2 stroke is still a better race bike (havent riden a YZ250F yet, which will probably change by opinion on this matter), but for an all rounder the 4 stroke wins hands down. And for the purpose of this argument, a trails bike is nothing like a normal 2 stroke (long stroke/heavy crank)

Please give us your definition of "powerband" and explain to me why you think 4 strokes don't have one...

I thought these idiotic posts were going to stop.

Its obvious you've never had a ride on a KTM 300EXC/MXC.

2-strokes have a powerband. 4-strokes don't!

Maybe it's time someone has a lesson in the engine dynamics.

EVERY engine in the world has a powerband, be it 2 stroke or 4 stroke. Any engine operates at it's peak efficiency (the powerband)at a given RPM. With a 2 stroke this RPM is largely decided by the expansion chamber volume and port timing. On a four stroke it is decided largely by port velocity, which is in turn decided by camshaft duration and lift. (This is why they developed V-TEC) Why do you think MotoGP bikes rarely drop below about 11,000RPM and you family car gets a bad case of asthma at anything over 4000RPM?

talking of powerbands check this Dyno Graph out.

Turbo GSXR1340 ?

I wish you guys could ride my bike. My 2 smoke is so much like a 4 stroke it's crazy, the biggest difference is my 2 stroke weighs 35 pounds lighter than my WR did.. I can really throw the bike around trees and doesn't feel top heavy at all, it's quiet and electric feeling. For desert riding I'll take a 4 stroke hands down, that's why I'm getting one next year. To each his own.. I'm gonna try to keep my KTM...

Ok ok... I agree, 4-strokes are becomming more popular, but not exactly taking over. And as far as 'rideability' on 'tight' trails, 2 vs. 4 is a toss up. I learned how to ride on a underpowered kx125(under powered for my size/weight) I rode that bad boy for 8 years, never had any mechanical problems, changed the plug 1/yr and rode some more. I feel I am a better rider today becuase I learned on that bike. I learned how to use skill, balance and momentum insted of raw power to get myself out of sticky situations. I rode my tired CR250 for another 8 years, on TIGHT single track double black diamond trials, desert sand, dunes, and more TIGHT single track knife edge trails. The CR did everything I needed, and it was still underpowered for my size and weight. On tight trails, you almost dont want a big freight train bike like aXR600 or even a KX500. It would be unmanagable. A KDX200, EXC250 or CR250, or XR250 would be more suitable for the 'tight' stuff.

To me, being a good rider is not about how fast you can go, but how well you can do it. Now Ill admit, I just aquired a brand new WR450F and I love it. The power is a happy medium between classic 2 and 4 stroke power bands. It is great for all types of riding! But the bike does not make the rider good, but it helps.
