Are you guys replacing the heat sheild on the side panel? I was going to install some of that muffler tape from auto parts store.....instead of buying the $$$$ yamaha stuff.

......or should I just leave it off?

I buy the heat sheild panels from Parts Unlimted and cut them to fit my side panels and use an agressive kayak outfitting glue that is impervious to water and mud. Lasts a good long time if you do that. The panels are 12" x 12" square sheets that you cut and fit to the inside of your side cover.

I have also used the cut sheets. But you can also order the OEM heat shields from you dealer or rom an online source. From yamaha of troy the OEM sheild is only $15-20 depending on year and model.
