I believe you replace the first set of plates, one steel and one friction, with the first two "plates" (one actually acts as a spring) from an '01.

I have not done this, I put a Hinson on my '00 before the '01 came out and that helped a great deal, but my stock '01 clutch still works 100% better.

More than a few TTalk members have done this, I have heard that the new plates change the clutch throw, coincidentally (?) there is also an extra piece to the linkage in the '01s that the '00s don't have.

Part Numbers:

5JG-16321-00-00 is the first friction plate

5JG-16383-00-00 this is the spring thing

5JG-16384-00-00 called the seat plate, goes in first.

All three should total about forty bucks or less.

The "extra" clutch linkage piece is an 11/32 ball that goes between the end of the actuating rod and the hat-shaped doo-hickey that pushes on the pressure plate. Sorry, no PN for this, but some guys have done w/out this part and I don't know if it is necessary, but if it were me I'd go ahead and order it to see if this the way to go, it is only 95 cents on Parts Fish...

Hope this helps.

Steve, don't leave us hanging. Tell us what is going on with your bike.

Sorry!

After discussing the finances with my wife I've decided that I have to do the work myself. At least most of it. I apologetically called the shop yesterday and told them. They said "no problem." I don't return to Houston until next week so I can't tear it down until then.

My wife said "Hey it's your hobby right? If you don't learn to do it now you never will." Sometimes women are logical at the wrong time.

I will repost after I tear things down.

Let me know if you need a hand. I have a crescent wrench, a new roll of duct tape, and an unopened pack of JB weld. I'm sure we could use all three!!

Seriously, if you need anything, give me a shout!

Steve have fun tearing it down. It's actually not that bad (depending on what is broken, bent, scored) My buddy has a '00 WR 400, we were out on our first ride for the year and he punched a hole in the ignition cover. All the oil drained out. Not good. Even worse was that here in Washington there is so much mud that sometimes you can hardly see the motor. He didn't see the hole.... DOH!! Anyways he kept on riding and made it for another 2 mi. and the bike seized. We took the top end off removed the piston and cylinder, (both were badly scored and the rings were melted), and replaced cylinder, piston, rings, and ignition cover. I think he did it all for about $550. He got off easy. Hope the rebuild goes well, good luck.

I haven't forgotten about that 1/4" torque wrench of yours. ?

Update for the TT brothers!

I had the shop tear apart my engine today. I bit the bullet and decided that I just was too inexperienced.

I was shocked to hear what it was.

The clip from the exhaust camshaft (from underneath the cam caps) was rolling around in the engine - NOT WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE!

When I talked to the mechanic he asked if anyone had adjusted the valves lately. I said "No, why?" So he proceeded to explain what he found. Well, it turns out that I did have the camshafts off to see what size shims I had, but I have put 30 hours on the bike since then! I THOUGHT I was very careful getting those clips back in properly.

I guess not.

Anyway, I can't believe my luck. There was no damage to the engine. The clip got caught on the timing chain guide and tore a small piece of some rubber part. That's it.

As for the engine being locked up, the circlip must have gotten wedged between the chain guide and the chain when I stalled the bike in the corner. Then when I went to kickstart it, the clip wouldn't let the chain move. As for the oil not registering on the dipstick - as I rethink the events it was a good five minutes after the engine had been off before I checked it. Maybe more since I just sat and stared at the damn thing for a while thinking about what could be wrong.

Yikes!

I'm still counting my lucky stars. I just got off the phone with them and the bike is running great. I'm only out the labor/gaskets to take the engine apart and put it back together.

Hope this experience is useful to others. I do feel stupid though.

Great news!! ?

Now you can tell them to go ahead and have the external tanks added to your forks with all that money you saved!!! :D

I can't believe you rode for so long with that thaing floating around in there. Expect the worst and hope for the best. Isn't it a good feeling when something goes your way?

I just thought of something else. What would account for no oil showing on the stick? Were you just that low?

I know, it was a long-winded post but I did answer that question too. ?
