YZF400/426 for a trail bike?

I do just fine with the stock flywheel. I never needed a weight. Guess I ride to fast. ?

I've got an 02 426 with a 51 rear sproket and a 12 oz. flywheel and it does great for the riding I do, which is mostly medium fast trailing and fooling around on the track (I don't race). However, as much as I love my bike, and even with the lowered gearing, in tighter stuff I really wish I had a lower first gear. I could lower the overall gearing even more, but with the gear ratios so close and the top speed already becomming an issue on fast fireroads, I don't think this is a good idea.

I will say that with the amazing torque this motor has and the flywheel weight I never stall, even at very slow speeds, as this thing will pull from idle--although at times it doesn't sound very happy about it. Next year my oldest boy will start riding and this bike will not be ideal for putting around with a kid who's learning so I will either buy a second bike like a CRF230F (maybe the wife will finally learn to ride) blow up my tranny and replace it with WR or buy the new CRF450x when it comes out.

My bike does great in most trails but it can get pretty clutchy in tight stuff cause the yz's weren't made to go slow but if you get a flywheel weight or an auto clutch you'll never miss the low gearing. plus i can take my bike to the track.

but the handgurads and somthing to help the lowend are a neccessity i just did the free powernow and you'll have yourself a great all around machine except be home by sunset for sure its no fun riding by flashlight ?

its very easy to install the overflow tank on a yzf, just use a metal strap for the lower mount, but this does not reduce boilovers. what it does is hold the overflowing coolant until the radiator can pull it back in. mine still boils some fluid every time i ride, but i never have to check the level.

i dont think this mod lowers the temp of the bike, it just assures that you wont lose any coolant. if you want a lower or more stable temp, get a boyesen water pump kit. and use the overflow bottle. and engine ice. and water wetter. ?
