MarkUK, so let me get this straight:

1) Your position on the team is hooker?

2) Your position entales having your teammates grab your shorts?

3) You enjoy this?

Sounds a little...um...questionable for a "man's" sport. Especially when you have a "famous" guy who tackles people by the bunghole.

I'm joking of course, I know rugby is a tough sport. Shame they can't afford pads though...

Soccer is a great game to play. Its non-stop action and you have to be really fit. I played in college, just as most of us like watching SX or MX, I like watching soccer because I know the subtle stuff that goes on that people who do the sport recognize. But watching on live TV has a basic problem. Theres no break in the action. Hockey, SX&MX have the same problem. How many times have you missed something because they decided to run a commercial at a bad time?

Football is perfect for TV. The play, then break gives time for commercials. And commericals make it all possible, thats where the $$ are. Hey, we are a TV addicted country, is it any surprize that our primary sport is taylored for TV?

Don't get me wrong, I love watching football. There is nothing else like it. (Although it was more fun when Elway was around). But alot of the players are chemically enhanced mutants. Do you think the US has a lock on the weight and performance specs of humans? Do you think a 180 lb guy benching 500 lbs and running 4 second 40s is natural? Football is serious $$$, and the fame is no small factor either. Drug use is endemic. Read Lyle Alsado's story if you don't believe me. I think if rugby had that kind of pressure on the players to perform, you would see the same human performance (maybe they do, I don't follow rugby).

People who don't ride question me if I want "the motorcycle influence" on my kids. They lump the Hells Angels and the metal mulisha (sp?) in with the MX althletes. Personally I don't think some football players are good role models. When was the last time a known MXer was accused of rape or murder? You don't have to go too deep into the roster of a pro or college football team to find some pretty poor role models for your kids.

You got to hand it to MX. My guess is that the top guys are probably more drug free than just about any other athletic sport out there. (No golf is not an athletic sport, but I digress...) I just don't think Carmichael, Ferry, Lusk, Larocco, Reed, etc are shooting up roids. Well, I am sure there is some recreational drug use, ala Emig, but thats outside of the job. And last I checked, no one has yet murdered his wife or girlfriend.

hell if they ran a comercial break in the UK during live soccer,,,,people would storm the tv studio,,,, aside if anyone was stupid enough to advertise , while your chosen team scored that vital goal,, they'd never sell another product again,

ive just watched England loose to the cheating Brazil,,[wipes yet another tear away] ?

the whole country basically came to a stop for 2 hours,,, bars opened at 7am,,full of singing screaming fans,,,

no cars on the road,,,

people late for work or not going at all,,,

Kids watching at school,,,

Huge screens set up in central london, with 10's of thousands of people watching outdoors

The game being watched at work/ in fire stations/ in hospitals by patients and healthcare staff ,,,in shops,,,,,,

Retail sales while the world cup has been on have been very low in the UK,,, the only things selling well has been wide screen TV's

Basically EVERYONE is @ the game

as the game moves on,,,

WE SCORE 1-0 up,,,

If it had been a major Baseball game how many then??

We play Baseball here in the UK,,,,, although we call it 'Rounders',,, and to be fair its only really played by younger schoolgirls (again they dont wear pads or helmets)

So im now torn,,,, if USA loose it means germany is in with a chance of winning the WORLD CUP (oh the Horror )

if USA win it means they did better then England in a sport which as a country,, they dont really care about.

Oh well ,,,, at least when it comes to jumping a motorcross bike,,,,,,,the ENGLISH are the best in the WORLD ,,,,,

That # sounds a little high. I bet 2,997,000 of those t.v's had the owner fall asleep watching "Baseball Tonight", and Soccer just so happened to pop up on at 3am..

U.S. Soocer fan (from what I've been subjected to) sounds like a whining bitch. If you listen to sports talk radio here, you've had one of the three fans call in sometime in the past week. They vomit their mantra about being "passionate" and cry about no shows dedicated to their "sport" blah blah. The host generally tells them that the reason why there's no shows dedicated to their "sport", is because it sucks. At that point, "Soccer fan" generally starts balling and threatens to have his "life partner" come down to the station yada yada, and hangs up.

This is a flame thread right? I rarely flame anything. But sorry, baseball deserves it. Outside of bowling and golf, it has to be one of the worlds most stupid sports.

Lets get this straight. There are 18 guys playing, not counting reserves. At any time, EIGHT are on the bench. Over 90% of the time, the remaining 10 are STANDING AROUND. ONE guy throws the ball. Sometimes, one guy swings at it. Rarely, he hits it. If it happens to be in bounds, there is a very short flurry of activity. Nobody runs more than a few yards. And we pay these clowns MILLIONS. We have the nerve to call that a SPORT, and I am ashamed that some people believe it is our national PASTIME. What a crock. But again, its so slow moving and boring that it goes great on comercial TV.

Racing is the oldest and most pure form of sport. And in a tribute to another sport Americans could care less about (it sucks on TV, of course), but is widely recognized by the rest of the world: GO LANCE!

fastkevin's right about the 3am soccer thing, i stayed up last night untill about 3:20 am and at around 2:30 or 3, that england vs. brazil game came on. i SWARE i gave it a chance! but it couldnt hold me lol ? i turned the channel at around 6 minutes in i think and i came back a few minutes later and england scored already, i figured darn i just missed the whole game.

Soccer I consider a tough sport. I consider Pro Motocross tough. I think anything that pushes a person's endurance is tough and worthy.

baseball sucks, football sucks, lacrose sucks, soccor sucks, skateboarding sucks, BMX sucks, hockey sucks, and basketball sucks. These are sports for people who are too wussy to get on or in something with a motor. There are few exceptions.

Chevy's, Suzuki's, and most motorized sports rule.
