YZ muffler on a WR

Recommended Posts

Hamish,

I put a yz muffler on my '03 wr450 and it's just as quiet as my modified original muffler.Power wasn't changed too much but it just smoothed out the power delivery and made it a fair bit more responsive down low and it's got a decent note ? .

Make sure if you get one though that you repack it first and chuck the original packing and the wire mesh stuff as far as you can.Just get some of the thick stuff(MCAS) for the ends and a couple of thin sheets for the main packing.

I got mine from a mate who had the genuine packing burn through on a ride and it burnt the side cover to bits, and the genuine stuff costs a bundle and burns out in no time.

You'll have to get a longer bolt for the mount as well.

I just got the stock pipe off of my brothers 04 YZ450 and am going to put it on my 03 WR450 this weekend. I modified the pipe by cutting 3" off of the end of the can and the internal pipe to make a shorty pipe. It looks sharp and I am anxious to get it on the bike. My stock exhaust is loud as hell with the baffle out so I figure this one can't be much worse.

Has anyone here swapped these pipes and had to rejet?

You guys might want to send a PM to Sylvain because, if I remember correctly, he's done it on his WR426. He now runs a YZ426 pipe and is pretty happy with his setup.

He's a gentleman, always happy to help on this forum when he can. ?

I found a semi-cheap YZ426 silencer here on TT and put it on my 2001 WR426. However, the cost was not all that great once I found out that the stock WR has a spark arrestor built-in, and if I wanted to ride in the mountains here in Colorado I would need to get an aftermarket spark arrestor for the YZ silencer. I searched high and low and the cheapest Pro Moto Billet s/a I could find one was $110 at my dealer. By the time I bought some new packing, the total price came to ~$175. So keep this in mind when looking at the FMF and big gun systems on Ebay and here on TT.

I would have to say though that with the new exhaust, the bike sounds great and has added power and with the new packing is not too loud. I'm glad I got the YZ silencer because from my research, the stocker YZ was about as good as some of the higher end silencers.

Hope that helps. PM me if you want me to send some pics of how I mounted it and the part numbers. ?

I got the YZ pipe from my brother in New Orleans so I haven't seen it next to my WR pipe until I got back home here in PR. I held the shortened YZ450 pipe up next to the stock WR450 pipe to compare the size. :awww: They appear to be the same legnth. If I hadn't already taken 3" off of the YZ can it would be that much LONGER than the WR can and exit up near the top of the rear fender. I was hoping to get the YZ can mostly hidden behind the # plate but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen ?.

Gomopar,

What type of sound limits are in place in PR?

Here in Cal they want us to blow a 96 db. My Big Gun quiet system blew a 97 last weekend at a enduro. We have a +/- 1.5 variance here so I was good to go.

What do you have to comply to in PR?

You can make one yourself, easy enough... just get the right bit of alloy or stainless tube, with a bend in it, and weld it on the end of your outlet, pointing down... or you can buy one cheap... if you are gutting the stock OZ WR muffler, then you have a lot of creative choices, if you are fitting a cap to an aftermarket unit, you will have to match one up, maybe from the same manufacturer...

I don't have a stock YZ unit, but with the Australian MX level still set at 102 dB, most pipes will be 'legal', but on the road, or off road, the noise is more of a personal thing...

What happened to the SuperTrapp idea? I can still get you a good deal on a Carbon Fibre E-series... ?

Sound limits?:usa:? In PR??? ??

Stop it tp3dxf, you're hurtin' my sides?

I have never had anyone tell me my bike was too loud. I take some long road rides and don't want to have to wear earplugs. That is where the concern about the sound level comes from.

BTW: As near as I can tell, you get extra points for actin like a hooligan here?. Example: One time I rode down here my wife was on her GSXR and I was on my WR. We headed out one town north of us and visited a bike shop for some stuff. When we headed back we went on the toll highway because it was smoother. Being a nice day and having sparce traffic led to lots of wheelies and speeding. Heck, I left the toll booth on the back wheel until I went over the hill and was out of sight :D. A few miles down the road after more continous goofing off ??. Oh well, At least I earned this one ?.

The cop came over to me and asked me : "What are you doing on the toll road?" :awww:

That seemed like an odd question so I just went along with it: "What do you mean officer?".

His reply just floored me! "Your kind of bike is not allowed on the toll roads."

Me: "What do you mean sir?"

Cop: "Bikes that weigh less than 350lbs are not allowed on the toll roads (only three toll roads in PR)."

Me: "Well how am I going to get to the next town then?"

Cop: "where are you going?"

Me: "To the bike shop in Humacau."

Cop: "There is one closer in Naguabo. Take the next exit here and follow me. I'll take you there."?

It turns out the cop had received a call about my bike from where we started out about 20 miles back. He never mentioned the wheelies or speeding even though he had to be doing over 100mph himself to catch up to us. He was from Naguabo and the bike shop he took us to was owned by a friend of his. Things are just handled a little different down here :D

With a full rebuild on the girls 2 smoke in progress and also building a PW50 for her daughters birthday, I'm current in cheapskate mode . Just lost an ebay auction on a white bros e series ?

  • 1 year later...

I just bought a yz450 pipe for my 03 450 as well. Do I need to rejet?

I have not fitted it yet. The bike currently has the stock pipe on it and the bike Kicks over really easy right now.

I am also in australia (coast)

Lid off top of airbox.

Most likely go one more richer on needle and maybe 1 main jet size bigger.
