450 Plastic on 426 COMPLETE WITH PICS

Recommended Posts

Have found quite a lot of bits on ebay (U.S) from various 03 250/450F's, so we're getting there slowly, and have found some very good shops that ship to the u.k.. Motosport outlet, and MX South being two of them. I was amazed, i didn't know there was sooooo many "trick bits" available for the yammys, your lucky you guys, your spoilt for choice and cheap too! over here in the U.K there is one or two online stores that have very little stock of anything and boy is it expensive!!!! has anyone, any pics of the 05 rear subframe/battery box so i can get an idea just how different they are to an 03/04 250/450F subframe etc? spent hours browsing those two U.S stores yesterday and so far have found brand new Clarke 03 Stock Tank (they say they can do me a Yellow one for around $159 plus postage), new Subframe (think it was from AC Racing) and new Tall SDG Gripper seats complete too, and not to mention the Carbon Fibre stuff, wow! There's loads of it! I can't wait to start this mod now, just have to acquire the bits as i go along and hopefully i won't have to wait too long for postage, and fingers crossed i won't get stung for Tax when the postie arrives with them?

So to clarify, is this everything that i need in order to mod my 02 WR426F to a 03-05 YZ450F:-

YZ250/450 Rear Subframe 03 onwards (05 if i want to add a battery)

YZ250/450 Seat. 03 onwards or 05 only (for the battery?)

YZ250/450 Tank (can i use my existing petcock and hardware, with fabricated mounts)

YZ250/450 Airbox 03 onwards or 05 only (for battery)

YZ250/450 plastics (not a problem as Acerbis copies seem readily available)

YZ250/450 rear Master Cylinder 03 onwards, without fluid cylinder, or could i use my 02 if a mount is welded onto rear frame)

what about the radiators? do they differ from my existing? i need a replacement right-hand one anyway as mine is twisted, so may purchase some new ones, expensive though!

I have also "had a word" with a local supplier of the Hurricane Graphics kit and he seems to think he can get me just the graphics, as i wont need the full kit as i am unsure yet whether to have yellow fenders/fork guards/plates or black, carbon would be very nice, but pricey.. and since Acerbis do them for models 03 onwards in yellow/black etc they can be acquired last when the "hard bits" are done.

Do you guys know of anymore good dealers over there, the more the merrier, i love browsing, it amazes me just how much choice you guys have got! makes me wonder if MX/Enduro is waning in popularity over here in the U.K as dealers seem to be harder to find than when i used to ride MX all those years ago? and since a fellow Manxman has just become Enduro World champion (heads-up to Dave Knight) maybe the interest in off-roading will pick up again and more suppliers will appear? but not quick enough for me! lol....

anyway, thanks again guys for all the help and advice. have a look at my bike as it is now (my garage) and hopefully in the next few months i will post some pics of it during/after the transformation, maybe this will help those who are also thinking of the switch?

cheers guys....

Only the 05 WRF subframe/airbox/seat accepts a battery. The 05 YZF subframe is a bit lower than previous years. Existing fuel tank hardware works with some new frame mounts. Yes, existing rear master will work if a mount is made for reservoir.

Stock rads will work, or you can utilize aftermarket ones. I have fluidyne ones, and they are the same part for the 426 and 450.

Not sure who you know, but Thumpertalk's own store seems to be pretty cheap for OEM parts.

95% done with my conversion. For my brackets I just used metal straping and connected it to the stock mount and radiator mount. My cost run down was:

subframe and airbox $70

Gas Tank and Shrouds (with graphics) $65!!

Complete rear 03 yz450 brake $35

Complete set of Plastics $30 (used once from a privateer Joel Olholf sp?)

stomp grip pads (need to install) $5

Grand Total of $225 ? Gotta love esnipe and ebay

Just thought i'd give an update...

INSTEAD of fabricating tank brackets, I drilled a hole in the frame and through bolted it to the tank. Had no issues at the time of drilling. On the first riding day of this year, I started up the bike and oil started leaking out of this spot in the frame pretty rapidly :bonk::bonk::bonk:??:bonk::bonk:

Well, after that was over we decided to thread the holes that were previously drilled, then instead of through bolting it we got two separate screws and put some permitex on them and screwed them into the frame. After waiting for an hour I got back and started the bike up and not even a drop came out.

Later the next day we went riding and after the ride, not a drop appeared to drip out, so looks like it is fixed.. my front tire blowing out in a 5th gear wheelie is a different story though :bonk:

Has anyone had a problem with the upper exhaust mount? My lower exhaust mounts fine but the upper mount is about the width of the bolt off. The pipe is a full Dr. D pipe for 00 426 and the subframe is a 03 250F which is the same as the 03 450F. Any suggestions? I have pulled and tried to get the brackets to line up but can't do it. I am about to cut the bracket off of the exhaust, reposition it and have it welded.

Thank for the input,

Steve
