Ceramic Exhaust Header Wrap question???

A question for those who have did this, did you like it? How well did it hold up? Did it cause you any problems or difficulties?

Would you do it again?

I've never done it. But I've seen alot of bikes with it. It serves it's purpose as to keep the heat in and out your exhaust tip. However, it peels and looks like hell after a few rides. Best bet is to take the header off and have it ceramic dipped, nice look and does the same thing. Having mine done soon for cheap cash... ?

I use

on the header of my 01 XR650R and KTM 660 Rally. It's not a ceramic wrap, I don't know what ceramic wrap is.

I can't tell if there is any performance benefit, but I do feel the bike running cooler between my legs and no more metling my pant legs from the exhaust pipe.

Ridden 7-8 hours all day with the wrap on pipe, they hold up just fine. Hose the mud off after riding and the wrap just stays put, run teh bike a few minutes after just to dry off the wrap, no problem.

I would wrap my headers again if the existing wrap ever comes apart, so far at 4-500 miles of riding..no problem whatsoever.

I have it on my XR650L. It helps a lot to spray it with the special coating they make for it (ThermoTec). The coating makes it more resistant to abrasion and keeps it from retaining so much water when it gets wet. The coating is available in silver or black, I used the silver.

I wrapped my XR400 header almost 3 years back, uncoated, just now starting to look a little frayed. I definitely know it runs cooler. I will do it again, and have done my daughters XR100, and my TRX250. Keeping heat from radiating back into the engine makes good sense to me. I have heard arguements on wrapping titanium pipes, that they get brittle, I dont know about that.

Definitely run the bike after washing. Rust can occur underneath the wrap, and probably will anyways. The "stainless" FMF pipe on the XR100 rusted underneath the wrap. I think if I have to replace the header every 5 years, it's offset by increased engine life from cooler operating temps.

If ceramic coating will do the same, or better, than wrap, do it!

Okay, I may do it this weekend if i get time. I will be using the thermo-tec shown above and I will get the spray on coating also. A drag racer friend has given me enough wrap for the job and the local race shop carries the wrap and spray so i will pick up a can.

Hopefully your friend has given you 1 inch width wrap. The 2 inch wrap is more difficult to work with on motorcycle headers, with the smaller diameter and tighter bends. If it is 2 inch wrap, it will be harder to get a nice looking job.

I got my Moroso 1 inch wrap, 50 feet, for $30 at a local parts store, and a some stainless hose clamps.

The coating was not thick enough to make a difference. It slipped on with no problems at all.

Okay, I did it. I wrapped my pipes this weekend with 1" thermo-tec and used stainless pipe clamps to secure it. It looks good, I took the pipes off sanded them very lightly to knock off any oxidation, sprayed them lightly with the wrap coating, wraped them and sprayed a couple of coats of coating on them, ate lunch and reinstalled them. The burnoff brought some interesting comments from my wife. I managed to work in about a half hour ride on Sunday afternoon and noticed no problems or significant changes. Right now I don't think it will warrent any re-jetting, but it was only a short ride.

It took more wrap than I expected, I didn't measure but I thought I would have twice what I needed and yet I only had a short piece left.

I recently purchased a Clark 4.8 gallon fuel tank and will lose the wings when I install it. I am concerned about heat because I live in South Texas where the temps run consistently in the mid 90's during the spring to fall period.

I am considering the header wrap to lower temps around the head area and installing a passive heat sink on the oil filled down tube of my XR650L to reduce both air oil temp. I do not have a dipstick temp gauge to read temps, but with the headers on both sides of the down tubes shouldn't removing heat from this area help the BRP run a little cooler? I thought that the heat sink would help to dissapate heat from the down tube without and extra lines to worry about. I am also planning to cut the back of the front fender up about 1 1/2 higher to provide more air flow to the head.

Does this make sense to you guys? Do you believe that the stock header pipe will withstand the extra heat? Personally I wouldn't be too bothered by having to re-wrap the header pipe every six months or so, but I'm not too keen on having to replace the header every 16 months.

ps I have removed the smog stuff and performed Dave and Brian's carb mods already.

Find a shop that does it and have your header ceramic coated(silver). That's what I did and it works well.

I've wrapped my headers with the Thermo tec wrap, helps your exhaust scavange better and keep heat away from the engine and your legs..

Don't spray it with high pressure water and it will last a long time...

Mines been on for over a year and still looks good........

Well I put the Clark tank on and used Heat Barrier to the underside of the tank; wrapped the header pipe and sprayed it with heat coating; and trimmed the front fender. Rode the bike off road, on the highway and around town without any apparent heat problems so far. I am very pleased with the results and put FX Graphics XR decals on the tank to give the bike a more finished look.
