Help! WR400 took up Smoking without my permission!

I have been having some problems with my bike sputtering in 5th lately. I decided to take apart the carb and give it a thorough cleaning. While in the process, I noticed the intake manifold had a dirt film on it along with the carb. I cleaned the carb and put it back to my original settings since none of the other jetting changes made any difference.

Upon replacing the carb, I decided to put a small amount of grease around the rubber intake hose on both sides of the carb. I also used carb cleaner to clean out the manifold from what I could reach and see. To finish this off, I cleaned and soaked my air filter. I then reasembled everything and tried to start it. After finally getting the bike started, I noticed that there was a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust pipe (mostly from where the head pipe connects to the mid pipe.) I had the bike running for about fifteen minutes, took it for a spin around the block and then let it sit idle for a few more minutes. The bike continues to smoke heavely. I did oil my cables using slick50 spray and got a little on the pipe, but I can't imagine it taking 15 minutes to burn off.

What could I have done? The only thing that I can think of is that the freshly oiled air filter is sucking some of the oil into the bike and burning it off. However, no smoke or discoloration is exiting the silencer. The smoke is only comming from the joint.

What color is the smoke? Blue = oil

Pull the plug and check for oil burn.

I would reseal that joint and then clean the area where the cable lube got on the pipe. Fire it up and check again.

You may be burning the filter oil and grease. You need to seal your air box boot with silicone. The dust issue would be my concern at this time, if you over oiled your filter the clear water drain at the bottom of the air box will be full of oil. Pull the air box and remove the boot to carb, and apply silicone to the mating surface of air box. Good luck ?

If you cleaned and re-oiled your filter, then fired off your bike, I can almost guarantee you sucked air filter oil into your main AIR jet, and pilot AIR jet. You will need to pull the carb, remove the float bowl, remove the air horn (on the airbox side of your carb) shoot carb cleaner into the two air jets there, then blow it clean. If the oil is still fresh, you may not need compressed air for this part.

You should wait several hours after re-oiling your air filter before firing off your engine. The oil has to setup. I let it sit overnight before firing off my bike.

Also, over-oiling a filter is as easy as falling off your bike. Smoke could be from lack of air into carb, amongst other things.

Also, the grease thing wasn't such a good idea (I have done that myself).

Would this cause the steam like smoke to come from the mid pipe? I'll tell you, this sucks. I just got through tearing apart the carb and cleaning it, now I have to do it again! What would happen if I don't? The bike already runs like Sh*t! Cleaning the carb and rejetting did not fix my studdering problem. Unless today that was from the air cleaner oil.

do you have a primary to secondary leak?

Head gasket leak where your coolant is leaking into the cylinder and blowing out your pipe.

Did this just start, or did it gradually get worse?

Pull your plug to see what that looks like.

I'd say if some of that grease may have gone straight through the engine and got into the pipe, other than that it doesnt make sense, pull the pipe off and have a look!

Since you say that the smoke is coming from the joint ONLY and not out the end of the silencer, I would say that it is the oil you used on your cables, if that is where you got some of the oil on the pipe. Depending on what type of oil you used it could take 20-30min to burn off. The same thing will happen on a car if you spill oil on the exhaust manifold, it takes a while to burn it off. If you were burning off oil in the cylinder you would ALSO HAVE smoke coming out of the silencer. If you over oiled your filter the engine will not breath properly and could effect your performance, or something else could be off.

Well I let it sit overnight and today when I looked, the tube at the bottom of the air filter is full! I really over oiled the filter! I started it again earlier and it was still smoking. I will let it run for a little longer and see if it completely goes away.

If this is the case, you MUST CLEAN OUT THOSE AIR JETS!!

It will not clean itself on it's own. The longer you wait, the more gummed up it will get.
