cam chain tensioner klx250 2011

my girlfriend has a klx250 2011 model and between 4000-6000 rpm it has an annoying rattle, i am almost certain it is the cam chain tensioner but my question is , at 32,000klms would the  cam chain need replacing also, for the guys that have already changed the tensioner was it only the tensioner that was faulty or did you need to replace the chain and guides

I didn't replace any guides.

You're probably hearing the cam chain. There is a spec in the manual to check for replacement. Just replace with OEM chain and tensioner.

the tensioner is a ratched thingy... it cannot go back, unless its broken...which I've never heard of...but what can happen, is that its not jumping to the next tooth, so chain makes a noise and is a tad lose... to fix that, undo both bolts that hold the tensioner in, slowly..both the same (probably less then 1mm gap) until you hear the click from the tensioner, then tighten it up again.

OP don't do this. You could make the chain too tight causing other problems.

While it could be the problem you first need to check the chain. Get a factory service manual. Measure the chain as specified.

cheers guys, just put in a new tensioner and still has the same noise. time for a full top end tear down

the bike is going in to the shop this week, spoke to a couple of people that had to replace the chain due to excessive stretch. will ask for the old chain back. will measure it then post the results
