My new near-mint 2002 cr250r

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to show off my new-to-me 2002 cr250r! My parents (in California) picked her up for me while I was living outside the US. I just moved back to Cali today after many years, and there she was looking sexy in the garage!!

It's in great condition considering the age. The dealer said he was selling the bike on behalf of the original owner. The bars are original and straight, it apparently still has the original piston, the radiators look straight, I think even the tires are the original Dunlops. Every nut and bolt is original and matching, no rust. The pipe has a nice big dent though... Can't wait to ride!!!!

your parents have CLASS!.. cr..she looks like  VERY low hr bike.. power comes on like a light switch.. keep it clean bro... here are some tips for ya.. put rubber strips between the rad shrouds where they touch the frame and put some on top of the sub frame between seat pan.. I am currently running an 07 base gasket, FMF fatty & shorty, boyesen rad valve, advance timing 2 deg.. all for bottom end gain and can feel a pretty noticeable low end gain without loosing on top.. if you do these mods it will run best with 50/50-105-110 race/93 pump gas.. stock rear wheel should checked for dead spoke tone often (no worries).. gen 3 cr best handling to this day.. nice ride congrats

these and the the 94-96 CR's are the best looking bikes ever made imo.  Soo clean, congrats!

I agree!! have you seen the pics of that white 96 in the pictures thread??  :jawdrop:

Thanks for the tips. rubber strips is a good idea, the shrouds had my '01 frame all eaten up! Don't worry I keep all my toys clean. I'm definitely studying my options to get the most out of the low end. It'll be for riding trails and woodsy stuff in northern cali. Another user suggested the head mod which I will probably try

Bike looks great but that old Z car is a keeper for sure.

Thanks, and the Z ain't going nowhere! I'd even considered installing a hitch on the Z and buying a trailer for the CR, but I think I'll end up getting a pickup!

my first "mod" after removing those old aftermarket graphics on the swing arm and front & rear fenders was to install a pro moto kickstand. It was by far the best money I had spent on my '01 CR. But unlike the kickstand I got for my '01, this one did not come with its own, longer mounting bolts. I'm not sure if they forgot to include them, or if this model just uses the stock bolts. Anyone know?

The other issue I had was that the mounting tab on the kickstand did not lie flush against the frame because it made contact with the frame welding (see picture below). So I had to file the kickstand mounting tab down for clearance. no problems now!

Here is the "before" pic where it made contact with the welding:

here are pics after filing it down:

It sounds really healthy.  I love my 03, with the PWK carb and just fixing the squish clearance made it really rideable with a lot of low end torque.  I only weight 165 though so if you are heavier and are looking for a woods bike, you may want to look into lowering the cylinder.

I weigh 125 and can't keep the front wheel on the ground!! I had a PWK in the '01 which was a great upgrade for that bike, but if i end up changing the carb on this new bike, i think i'll probably invest in a lectron and avoid all the jetting hassles. the bike right now is geared 14/48 and even like that it just wants to pull the front end up with every throttle twist! after i take it off road a couple times ill make a decision on the squish! thanks!!
