Pilon fracture on both ankles

Recommended Posts

So last month I entered a local race at a track I had never ridden at. There was a small double on the track that I have been clearing easily all of practice. During the race though, I got stuck behind a slower rider while approaching the jump. I was in 'race mode', so as soon as I realized he was gonna roll it, I switched my line and pinned it. By that point, it was too late to pick up enough approach speed to clear the jump and I cased it real bad. I got xrays later that night and the doc said both my ankles have pilon fractures (Apparently this is when the ankle bone pounds into the tibia, destroying cartilage and shattering both bones). I had a five and a half hour surgery that required 9 screws and a plate on the right and 7 screws and a plate on the left. I am five weeks postop and the other day and the surgeon/orthopedist said I should be able to start walking in 6-8 weeks, but he suggested I wait to ride for another 11 months  :banghead: . VERY frustrated. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had this rare type of fracture and how long the recovery time was, etc. Thanks a lot. (postop xray attached)
