2004 rmz 250 oil leak

Recommended Posts

Guys I"m wanting to know what causing my rmz 250 blowing oil out the breather tube. While the engine is running it is leaking oil out the breather tube and its not little bit either pretty good stream.

I just picked it up from a kid who was done riding and didn't want it any more. It hadn't been run in 2 years and the owner said it had an oil leak. I found it. It has oil in the sight glass just under the half way mark. Can anyone tell me whats causing it am I going to have to rebuild the engine or not.

Either overfull or crankcase pressure.

But I put 1.5L in everytime...20w-50...anywhere in between the two lines on the sight glass. I dont remember a "halfway" mark. Just a hi and lo. Keep it in between. Check it hot, even with engine running look. But I check hot and motor off.

Ive had an 04 for ten years and never saw one problem anyones complaining about. My 2010 I really dislike vs my 04...ALL my liquid cooled mx bikes are hot. Ti sucks anywhere but the poles in my leg. But those dont get hot! So stock valves do suck. No probs with steel. Never had a shifting problem.

Check crankcase pressure. Look up schematics and compare.

If you had blowby thered be less oil. So less likely a leak would happen. This is pressure building.

Id get a compression test first. Worn or rings installed wrong.

And the harder to fix problem, the reed valve that closes when piston pushes down is broken or stuck open letting oil get pushed out. Probably the oil getting tossed around my clutch spinning. This is a harder to fix issue, yet an issue harder to get.

Sure youre not overfull? Only using sight glass...kick bike over a bunch (25x) of times with the kill switch pushed in to distribute the new oil. But buy a plastic measuring cup.

When was its last piston refresher?

Ive heard of people putting a breather out of the valve cover... Doesnt correct the issue, but no constant dripping

So an update on this bike from this weekend. We changed the oil and put a new air filter on. Basically we did a complete tune up. The fuel in the tank was bad so we changed it. Ran the bike to get it hot and then watched the breather tube. The oil that was pouring out the tube is now stopped and isn't leaking. The bike runs better but I think the carb needs to be gone through has a hard time starting and staying running at first. Tends to stall on ride when taking off, But over all does run strong but we will still keep an eye on this oil leak. I am sure the rings are not great and that's the cause. With a thicker oil I am sure its sealing the ring issue.

Thanks for the help.

Stuart
