ATK 605 questions

Recommended Posts

Just bought a 94 or 95 605 CC ES.  Not sure of the year because the id tag is  missing from the frame head stock.  Sucks they didn't actually stamp the VIN in the metal.  Couple questions about the motor first.  I have two oil leaks that I can see.  First, oil is seaping from the crank lock bolt on the lower clutch side.  Is there a copper washer or something behind it?  If I remove it without turning the motor, can it go back in without any problem?  Also, there is a metal tube pointed down and rearward on the block by the ignition cover on the right side.  This dripped oil pretty good when I was unloading the bike and continues to drip some on the bike stand.  What is this for and should there be tubing attached to it?  Thanks for any responses.

The crank bolt can be removed at any crank position it won't effect anything.  They do have a copper washer..  I recommend leaning the bike on it side or it'll leak a bit of oil when the bolt is removed.

As for the tube on the ignition side..  That is a vent and should not leak oil.  I'm pretty sure a bad crank seal will cause that to leak oil.  I know this is fairly common issue on older bikes and it may cause problems running it when leaking.  Hopefully someone chimes in on that one.

Make sure you change the timing belt asap if the history is unknown.  ONLY run the OEM Dayco belt.  If the belt snaps the engine is done.  Most recommend changing them annually.

Keith at american dirt bike can make a new vin tag if you have the vin number (on the title if you have one).

Most 95's (usually but not always) had a cylinder head to frame gusset, billet triple clamps, bolt on foot peg mounts on both sides, a stainless steel ATK lower chain slide and silver front axle clamps on the lower forks.  94's usually did not have those things (some did).  Hope this helps,

Give Keith a call I'm sure he'll know what to do about that ignition cover tube leaking.  http://www.americandirtbike.com

Also ATK now has the parts/repair/service manuals listed:  http://atkusa.com/Parts/ATK-Rotax

Post some pics.  They're awesome bikes imo  ?

Rot Box,

Thanks for the info.  Did a quick search and looks like changing the crank seal is not bad.  I'm glad the crank bolt leak is an easy fix.  Unfortunately, my bike has no title either.  I wasn't worried because I have acquired bonded titles for two other bikes before without problem.  This one will be more of a challenge because I'll likely have to get the DMV here in Texas to issue a new VIN for it, if possible.  If you know of a good 94 or 95 frame that's for sale that has the VIN on it, let me know and I'll buy it.  This is really a pretty clean bike.  Previous owner says he bought it without a motor and acquired the motor for it.  Says the bike was an ice racer at one time in it's life.  I plan on dual sporting it if I can get it titled.  I'll see about posting some pics of it.  Thanks

Very nice

The forks have been lowered makes sense for ice racing..  Pretty common on the 94-95's.  They are really--really tall.

Later model subframe, kickstand mount, and swing arm.  Billet clamps and head gusset..  I'd bet on it being a 95.

They make great dual sports.

It also has the bolt on peg mounts on both sides like you were talking about.  I'm going to consider it a 95 for now.  Previous owner thought that the forks had been lowered, but I wasn't sure because they are almost the same length as my CR Showa forks I put on my XR600R.  I know the bike is still tall because I am on my toes sitting on it.  I'm short at 5'7" though.  I'm thinking I wish it had the Supertrapp muffler on it, because this one is pretty loud.  I'll have to try and take it apart and make sure it is packed well inside.  Thanks for your input.  I welcome any comments and suggestions about the bike.  I am going to try to turn it into a reliable dual sport bike if I can get it titled.

  • 5 months later...

If you haven't already, I would still call Keith about the vin. I had an 89 604 with the vin tag missing. Unfortunately for me, he said the records for the LA built ATKs were long gone due to a fire. He made it sound like if I had a 94 and newer, Utah built bike, he could get me a vin from the motor ID number.
