Where did you ride today

Recommended Posts

just to check my brain...

http://www.chaparral-racing.com/blog/wp-content/Libraries/ARTDTL/Sprocket-Ration-Chart.jpg

based on that chart. the stock ratio is 2.86. just doing a 13t front is 3.08, 43t rear (stock 14t front) is 3.07, and your suggested 13t/42t would actually put it at 3.23

so either 13t front or 43t rear would have the same effect to the gear ratio, so the same performance would be expected. just that the rear sprocket would avoid getting into the chain guide problem (if it can be considered a problem).

the 13t/42t combo would still let me keep the chain, would clear the chain guide I'd assume, and give even more grunt when needed.

at least the things are cheap and easy to change hehe. might try the 43t rear first...see where that takes me...then go for the gnath standard later.

Hey Crapflinger

Nice trip report. I'll have to look up the location in Google Earth to get a feel for where you were riding.

I've done the 13t conversion and recommend it. Having said that I will very soon be putting on the 42T rear. I need lower gearing for the tight stuff I ride.

Tried for a maximum speed on the weekend. Long straight and flat. Managed 139 km/h which is 86mph. The bike might have managed a couple of kph more if I had kept on it but it was very slow acceleration by that time. Bear in mind my speedo is off after the 13t conversion.

With regard to bar height I fitted 35mm risers (1.5") and a protaper CR-mid bar. I love the combination, much less strain on my wrists and easy to ride standing.

Cheers

will get you roughly in the area

though if you feel like taking an actual eyeball at the area there's this https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2v0MkCa24rdUDRVMDVDTlloaWs  it's actually a pretty old KML file and not quite updated but it's got all of the areas I ride in in east TN (the guy that made this map has since switched to making maps for garmins and he sells them...so this is from when he used to give the google earth maps for free...likely at least 6 years old). the area we were in is labeled as the sunquist unit. if you leave all the trails on though, you can see the sheer quantity of trails I've got within 30 minutes of he house.

not that it matters but...we left from the gas station near the highway, went down 1 to where it ends by 13. that turns into an actual road...rode up the road to 24 which is gravel, over to 37 which is a bit of a mix, road all the way up 37 to the waterfall, went past the waterfall to the end of 37 on that map took that road that 37 ends at all the way around the ridge to the top of 36, came down 36, to 25 which is a gravel road, back to 24 down to the road again, went east on the road till we got to the beginning of 2 which follows the river past an old damn that they blew up after wwii, back to 1, then back to the truck.

as for gearing, I think I'm going to start with the 13t like all the cool kids then move up to the 42 later if it seems like I need it.

Hey Crapflinger

couldn't open your map thingy. (most likely operator error) but used the gps co-ordinates to see it in Google Earth.

Looks like heaps of tracks up there. Pretty country too. Tennessee... Patron State of shooting shit  ? A mate of mine who lived in west Virginia for a while reckoned Tenessee was like Tassie without the accents... We like shooting shit down here too.

Thinking of taking a run over the Wellington Ranges on Saturday. Need to test out the new chain and 44t rear which will hopefully arrive tomorrow. Will also try to get some video footage this time. Plan on filming the dog on the back and hopefuly a bit of snow riding.

Anyway, see you all on the other side.

Stay upright
