I need help quick

Recommended Posts

I just did an oil change on my 03 wr450 about a week ago, the first one since I bought it.(not the original owner obviously) When I checked the oil then, it was just a bit over and smoking a bit so I drained out a bit. I checked my oil today and it said I had no oil. I have been putting oil into it but now its smoking alot like I am way over full but nothing is on the dip stick. what is wrong

From my experience a frame should not have anything to do with oil or the level. Drain it all, fill it to the proper amount per the manual, and as long as it isn't leaking you are fine. Dirt bikes don't need dip sticks.... It's really not a "check and top off thing" you fill it with the proper amount. Run it for the allotted hours (per the manual), dump it and re-fill...

This is an 03 wr450, the steel frame holds oil and distributes it to the tranny and engine via a two pump system

O wow, that's kinda wild. I see what your taking about now, but it still should not change the amount of oil you would use.... Unless it would be somehow possible for the oil to be getting blocked somewhere, say between the reservoir and the motor or something? I'm not sure. Found this video for ya though...

Have you cleaned the frame screen?

Have you cleaned the lower pump filter passage from debris?

Have you checked the pump pressure using the test bolt?

You need to download a factory service manual from yamaha's site and follow the oil system maintenece intervals[/quote

Knew here had to be some way for the oil to be trapped or blocked. Just never owned a bike with oil running through the frame. Any positives to this design? I'm curious as to why they designed it like this. Sounds like a pain!!!

It allows extra oil capacity without increasing engine size, and also acts as an oil cooler. It's fairly common (XRs do it too).

Huh, very interesting. Never owned a big trail bike, my 90 model XR80 doesn't do this either so never encountered that. Kinda cool though. Just sucks that it can obviously get clogged, etc.

Another weird thing about them is they do not have a sight glass to check the oil you have an actual dipstick

That is kinda odd too. But actually none of the 4 bikes I own have either. No dipstick, or sight glass. That's why I am very anal about getting the proper amount in there and keeping it changed... ?. Needless to say, I have learned the hard way. Haha never run low on oil!!!

If there is enough debris in your engine to clog that screen you probably have some bigger problems to sort out...

I would agree. That doesn't sound good at all. So what do you think the OP's problem is? Sounds like something is clogged to me, but that is only because he said he was putting oil in and it was not getting to the dipstick... I obviously know very little about this, but it is interesting. Man if all of the oil was clogged and couldn't reach the motor you would be EFFFED!! It sounds anyways...

Okay I'm pretty sure I solve the issue all I did was drain all the oil by removing all 3 drain bolts and also replacing the oil filter because I needed to do that anyways and I added exactly one quart of oil and after properly checking it the oil is sitting right in between the full and low line on the dipstick so I think my issue was that I wasn't letting the bikes sit long enough before I was checking the oil

that'll do it. i have an xr400 that uses the same method and it can be fickle setting the level if you don't follow the right protocol. glad you worked it out.
