400ex starter clutch

Recommended Posts

If anyone could help that would be much appreciated. I have a 99 400ex. It makes a horrible sound when trying to start it up. Like a big knocking and grinding noise. I opened the case, but I couldn't get the flywheel off because I didn't have. A puller. But, from what I could see, there is a little rust inside the flywheel assembly. I ordered a new one way bearing and I'm hoping this will fix it. After it starts it runs like a champ. Can anyone help me out please!

When you replace the one-way clutch there are two other parts I'd recommend you change as well. These will be worn out from a bad starter clutch and are important to consider. The large gear is 72T and is the "driven" gear, the other one is referred to as "starting clutch outer" and can be sold with the one-way clutch as a new assembly. If you put only one new part in, the problem is likely still going to be there as all these parts wear out together!
