Hello everyone,

 

I ride a DRZ SM and i'm wanting to upgrade and bleed blue. I'm looking to buy a street legal WR450F. I am planning on doing a SM conversion or buying one already done. Living in California it's extremely rare to find street legal WR's and when they do come up, older models are a lot more affordable then the newer 2012+ models (excluding the 2015 new model). I don't know why but I guess lots of people live and die for Honda's in my area because I can find street legal CRF's all the time. But i'm looking for a race bike that can handle commuting and everything I throw at it and everyone says that Honda's will grenade eventually.

 

Anyway, old vs new? If i'm patient I can find street legal 03' to 11' WR's for around $4000 to $5000. If i wait for decades I can MAYBE find a 2012+ WR for about $8000+. Unless your Kx250FRiDeR651 who somehow found a 15' for $7200, lucky bastard.  :foul: . The problem is, I am in love with the 2012+ WR's. I love the styling and I am really wanting a supermoto with fuel injection. I love everything about the newer models and I'm not sure if I would want a older year WR.

 

So old vs new? Is it worth it to wait the million years and spend the fortune to get a newer WR as a SM? Or do I get out of my love affair with the newer WR's and buy a older one? Tell me what you think and why.

 

If I can't find a plated yammi I might have to try my luck with a CRF or go Euro with a Husky. Thanks for reading!

If you're lucky you might find one for a lot less than that... I paid $3400 for my 2003, plated, nice Excel/Talon 17s, Brembo 16x18 master, Braking 320mm rotor, Braking 4pot caliper, stock wheels with factory tires with tits still on them, etc. I'd certainly prefer a more modern one but I don't see them much and when I do they usually aren't set up for dirt, so if I spent $7k for an EFI WR I'd be in it at least $9k by the time it's set up well. On the other hand, if I found an EFI WR supermoto for a reasonable price I'd pay a premium over my 03, but not as much as people want.

Alternatively, I've been told my WR got a CA plate because it was plated elsewhere (TX) and brought in with "7600" miles on it (if >7500 it doesn't need to meet CA emissions standards). However, I can't guarantee that it'll work. You might need to make sure there are stickers on the bike indicating that it meets federal emissions and safety standards ;)

So did your bike actually have 7600 miles or was it set to that? I have thought about going out of state to find one but I would much rather find one here with all the work done to get it on the road.

This is something the previous owner told me, I bought it already street registered in CA. He said he took an odometer from a Harley and put it on, not even functional. It's clear the cylinder has been off at some point, so I imagine it's seen a fair amount of use, but the 17s on mine don't have a speedo drive and the gauges have been removed so I have no clue as to actual miles. It has an hour meter but don't know how early it was put on.

Does it still rip? That's the sketchy thing about buying plated dirt bike's is most of the times you wont know the mileage. Also is the engine in all WR450F's the same? Except for the fuel injection added in 2012?

Yeah, it runs well. It's hard to know how worn out it is whether you have a plate or not, though. 

 

There are some differences. 03 has a weak electric start setup. I think 04-06 are all very similar. Aluminum frame WR450s use an integrated (in the crankcase, a separate compartment) dry sump rather than using the frame as the oil reservoir, but a lot of parts are still compatible. Wiseco says their crank fits 04-06, not sure why not 03. Not sure what changed after that either. I believe the heads/cams are compatible for YZ/WR450s up until the reverse head versions, but there are differences.

I picked my '12 up in Oregon for $4600 ( 700 miles on it ),  plated it in South Dakota  for about $60,  $100 for the street legal shit ( turn signals, horn ), $100 for a Vapor  and $1400 for a new Warp9 supermoto setup with tires.

 

When I get to 7500 miles I'll wander down to DMV and transfer it to a California plate.

If you get pulled over on it there might be problems (the law requires you register it in CA within 10 days of purchase/import).

You can get a California bike if you can find one for the right price,  it makes no difference when it comes time (7500+ miles ) to transfer it back to California.

 

If you get caught on the bike and the nice officer asks you how long the bike has been in the state the answer is ALWAYS 3 days,  he can't prove otherwise.   

 

On that note,  don't do stupid shit in town to make yourself known to the local officers,  take that shit up in the hills where nobody cares.

When you buy a Vapor you can program it to any mileage you want when it's new,  they have it set up that way so you can replace a broken speedo and still have accurate mileage.  ( what you do with this knowledge is up to you )

 

I'm in no hurry to sell mine,  I like the damn thing too much. ( already halfway to 7500 )

Thanks for all the info man, I really appreciate it. I'm really interested in doing this myself now. Just scares me because I don't want to sell my DRZ to buy a WR450F and end up getting stuck without a road bike if something does go wrong.

I believe you'd need to make your own decorations for the bike. I can't guarantee this will work, I've just been told they look for stickers. 

 

When you bring a vehicle in from out of state the DMV does a VIN inspection where they check VIN, EIN, and safety/emissions labels. AFAIK they don't look for emissions equipment or require a smog check on vehicles that aren't subject to regular smog checks.

If it already has a California green sticker I'd be very surprised if you manage to get a plate for it. I'd be looking for a bike that has never been registered in California, is street registered in whatever state it's in (or you do the SD registration thing to get street registration before registering it here), and shows at least 7500mi on the odometer. Still no guarantees, though.

The green sticker doesn't matter one way or the other.   It's not the federal emission sticker to make the bike able to be plated in California.   There is a federal emission sticker on 50 state bikes stating that they meet the requirements for street legal use in all 50 states,  no WR450 will have it.   My friend John called DMV HQ and talked to the main guy that interprets their regs,  a previously green stickered bike is not a disqualification for the " loophole " that we use to get a plated bike with more than 7500 miles from out of state transferred into California,  as long as it " left " the state and came back in the regs apply.  The 7500 mile loophole was written so folks couldn't buy a new vehicle from out of state to avoid state taxes on the purchase,  when it was written there was still 49 state cars and California compliant vehicles.   At the time the regs were written California had just lost a court case where they were charging owners of 49 state cars more money on their registrations and renewals because they polluted more ( lol ),  they had to give the excess money back to the people,  so when the new regs were written they included a clause for 49 state vehicles and that is the one we use to transfer a bike into California.   The law states ( regs )   Street legal and registered in another state AND more than 7500 miles on the odometer an emission compliance sticker is not required.

 

That being said,   you may run into a DMV jackwad who doesn't know the law and denies you because he wants to see the sticker,  don't throw a big fit or get argumentative (  you are dealing with a government monkey, they don't &%$#@!ing care ) just go to a different DMV.
