Questons RE: 16' 450FX

Recommended Posts

I hate to fuel this fire but I'm trying to understand where everyone is getting this 20lbs difference between the FX and the KTM?

In stock form the 2016 KTM 450 XC-F (closest direct competitor to the FX?) weighs 108.5KG or 239.2lbs. Carries 2.5 gallons of gas or 15.5 lbs for a total curb weight of 254.7 pounds.

The YZ450FX curb weight is 262.

Yes the KTM carries an extra .5 gallons of gas but I'm comparing curb weight to curb weight for a difference of only 7.3 lbs.

Am I missing something here?

Numbers are wrong...

Facts is no one seems to be consistent with weights. Mostly what we read in the mags is what we go on. In the new Dirtbike they claim a 23lb difference between the 2 bike...

So back to only being 7 pounds off?

Well not that this matters, but I think the KTM website is off. The 2016 450 SXF is 224 pounds dry, with electric start! I don't think it's possible that the Xcf is 15 more pounds dry. That part doesn't make since to me, I think the FX is still 17 pounds heavier based upon SXF numbers. Edited by RMK800

It's crazy to think that the official KTM site is specking their bike to be heavier than it really is???

" At 245-pounds with a full 2.2-gallon tank, it puts the bike right at 232 pounds without fuel." Dirtbiketest.com

I'm just saying. I would choose the fx no matter what, and might, bc I can't seem to find any leftover '15 yz450s.

Just to throw a little food for thought in the weight discussion, a guy on ktmtalk.com posted this about his FE 350....

As far as weight goes, I went out to the garage today and put my Husky on the scale. 2015 FE 350, has OEM plastic skid plate, hard parts rear disc guard, flexx bars, BPD rad guards and Cycra hand guards. It had maybe 1.25 gallons of gas in it. She topped the scales at 269 lbs!

Of course I wasn't in the garage with him when he weighed it, but he's a reputable guy and I don't think he'd fudge on the numbers...

Thanks for the kind words, I placed plywood under the wheel not being weighed the same thickness as the scale.  Weighed both ends and total was 269 w/1.2 gals of fuel.  Bike feels light when riding probably due to the liveliness of the 350 engine, but it's far from light when you're loading of pushing the bike.

Yamaha seems to have an accurate scale. My 14 yz450f is 247# per yamaha and I just weighed it at 247.8 full of fuel. The .8 is roost deflectors and radiator braces.

Good to see someone actually weighing their bike instead of all the speculation. I figured Dirtbike mag was off on the 16 yz450f. They had it at 239 without fuel. A gallon of gas averages around 6lbs per gallon and the yz450f has a 2 gallon tank so that's 12lbs. of fuel which puts the yz450f at around 235 without fuel. Dirtbike mag was closer on the 2015 yz450f, they the 2015 yz450f at 236 lbs. when they tested it.

More Questions:

1) Will a 250 FX plastics kit bolt right up to the 450FX? Can't seem to find any specific to the 450 yet.

2) What is the deal with the stock shroud graphics?  Seems like they are embedded in the plastic.  Do people just put graphics right over that or but new shrouds to do that with?

3) What is everyone doing about a spark arrestor?  I've seen the pro moto billet for $150 or the FMF Power Core 4 for $300.  Wish RockyMountain would make a carbon Lexx endcap that fit this year.
