Trying to find a 13t sprocket....

Recommended Posts

I was talking with the mechanic at the Honda Dealer today and told him I wanted to switch sprockets from 14t-48t to a 13t and 50t. the mechanic said if i changed from a 14 to 13 it would cause the chain and sprocket to wear out because of the torque and tighter turn. He suggested I use a 14t front and a 51t rear.

I explained that I read on this site several owners were using the 13t and some had the 13t-50t set up with the stock chain. he still advised against it. Now I am real confused,

Should that even matter? They are roughly the same gear ratio - I don't see how that would affect sprocket wear....Very Strange. You'll get the same amount of revolutions on the drivetrain, regardless of the sprocket sizes used. Doesn't make sense... ?

its true the chain slider will get rubbed more at the pivot point of the swingarm with a 13 tooth sprocket. The chain just sits to low coming off the sprocket-clearly Honda didnt intend for this bike to run a 13 toother. BUT-you can get away with many hundreds of miles before rubbing thru.

I've got well over 2,500 off road miles with a 13T front sprocket and have no signs of wear or problems. My brother-in-law had over 17,000 miles on his bike with a 13T sprocket & stock chain before he sold it and never had any issues. I understand where the Honda guy is coming from in terms of theory because of the tighter turn, but I'm not a bit concerned based on my experiences so far and the feedback I've received from others who were using 13T front sprocket.

I'm not saying your mechanic isn't a good mechanic, but mechanics are people too and come in all varities when it comes to skills, experience, etc. I rarely put much faith in any mechanic when it comes to cars, bikes, aircraft, etc. Sadly, I've had way too many bad experiences from dealership mechanics on various products and doing everything myself has taught me a lot. The same thing goes here on TT or anywhere else in that you shouldn't believe everything you read. Don't be in a hurry to buy something or make changes without reading or hearing enough opinions until you feel comfortable with your decision.

Well I Just tried to put on the 13t Moose sprocket but couldn't, due to the holes being off, very slight, I tried to file the lock washer, but that metal was HARD!. put the 14t back on and am looking for another brand. Does anybody know the torque specs for the sprocket bolts. The rear axle is 69#. ?

I've noticed a definite increase in acceleration w/ the 13t front sprocket. I can actually lift the front end in the technically sections a little better now. I could even stand to put a 49 or 50 on the back, as well. ? Thanks for the help!

I used the 13 tooth front with favorable results but not quite what I wanted. I went to a 51 tooth on the rear and left the stock 14 on the front. The difference was only slight but exactly what I was after. I have even used a 53 tooth on the back which is great if you plan on climbing over the empire state building at a idle. ?

According to the gear chart it's halfway between stock 14/48 and 13/48. It will probably be noticable, but not drastically. Might consider the ironman 13T. I purchased mine at dirttricks.com and received it in 2 days! Easy to install.

I found I still had pretty good top end w/ greater acceleration. I could even sacrifice some more top end for more acceleration thrill. I do have a 954RR streetbike, so in my opinion the 650R is slow.....all things being relative... ? We all know that the XR rips!

Here's some numbers to give you an approximate idea of the maximum speeds you'll get in each gear with the following sprocket combos. Please note these numbers are based on a maximum engine speed of 8,000 RPM among other factors.

Gearing 13/50 13/48 14/48 15/48 16/48

MPH 1st....31.....33.....35.....38.....40

MPH 2nd...45.....47.....51.....55.....58

MPH 3rd....58.....60.....65.....70.....74

MPH 4th....72.....75.....81.....87.....93

MPH 5th....86.....90.....97....104....111

Gearing 14/50 14/51 14/52 14/53 14/54

Okay, I didnt wait, I installed the moose racing sprocket this evening. Went on with out a hitch. Every thing lined up perfectly. the small bracket for the bolts only goes on one way though.its not symetrical.
