For those who have done the clutch arm mod...

Hello all,

A couple of questions. Even if you are carefull, do you need to replace the clutch cover gasket after removal?

If this is the case, I need to get one before the weekend as I am going to do the clutch arm mod this week. Who is the most likely to have a large selection of OEM stuff in stock? Has anyone ordered from Troy?

I have ordered a couple rear break petals from Yamaha of Troy. They had them in stock when local dealers in N.H. and most other online places didn't. Prices were O.K. and like you I needed them before the weekend. I got them no problem.

zx7king, There are no guarantees that you can get it off without tearing the gasket, it would be a good idea to have one on had just in case. You may not need it this time, but just as sure as you dont have it you will need it. Good luck with the mod. I am going to do mine later this week. I already modified my clutch lever and now I am going to modify the actuator arm. I am hoping for 125 like pull.

I've had my clutch cover off 2 times and still have the same gasket. They are pretty durable, just be careful with it and it should be fine.

I was not as lucky as JBM when I pulled off my cover to strip the paint off,it(the gasget) shredded. As for Y.O.T. make sure you ask for Bobby Collet when you call, he will give you the best possible deal,I have had other sales people there charge me list.If Susan answers I strongly suggest NOT! to deal with her.She sat on my order for DSP pegs for 3 weeks when I called to see where they were I found that they hadn't even been ordered yet.And she was going to charge me $99.00 (list) for them Bobby got them to me for $89.00.He also Gave me a better price on a radiator than their advetised price wich was much lower than list

Well I finished the clutch arm mod. I have only welded one other thing in my life and let me tell you, mx action was right, it is NOT an easy weld. Actually the weld isn't that hard it is just hard to clamp it into position correctly. Anyway, I welded it, ground down the potrusions (there were a few ? , and painted it with metallic rustoleum... looks pretty good. In my previous post I asked if anyone had ordered from Troy Yamaha before and someone said they had and not to ask for the lady who works there. Well, that is who I got (before the good advice). She was as nice as she could be, but was very quick to get me off of the phone. I asked for the clutch cover gasket for my 02 426 and she said, okay, in stock, on its way, and basically ended the call right there. Well, I got home yesterday ready to do the mod and saw the envelope on my step and low and behold, I had a brand new right side crank case gasket. Thank god, when I took off my clutch cover, the gasket was not damaged at all. Anyway, food for thought. I am riding this weekend, I will tell you guys my thoughts on the clutch pull.

The one they are talking about ( I asume ) is where you remove the clutch arm, cut it and add approx. 5mm to the length of the arm between the pivot and the clutch cable hole. It is supposed to make it easier to pull.

I tried it on my 03yz450 and it didnt seem to help much. I put on the 04 cable and brackets and bought the GYT-R clutch kit.... SHAZAMM! instantly lighter clutch pull. I recomend it to all 03 yz450f owners. On a side note, if you do this use your stock lever or the longest one you can find. I used a shorty ASV, and it defeated the mod.. ( made it hard to pull again ) I went back to stock after that and its great.

Moose makes a lever with two cable mounting points, one makes it much easier to pull than stock. It cost about $35.

PEP makes a replacement clutch arm for this reason. I have one on my YFZ450 and it works perfectly. Not only is it an easier pull, but it eliminates the "grabbyness" of the stock clutch. I've had it for two years and I've never had any problem you might expect with lengthening the clutch arm such as not disengaging in cold weather.

on the 2001-2002 YZ426F all you need to do is buy the OE actuator arm for a 98-99 YZ400F. It is 5mm longer and slips right in....no welding. Then do the clutch lever mod and you will have clutch pull as light as a YZ125.

Here is the "clutch lever" mod as posted by "Gottaroost" on TT. I did this at the same time as the actuator arm.

just drilled my lever out today and relocated the cable barrel closer to the pivot point. Made a big difference! Then lubed it all, including the barrels with TriFlow...very nice feel. Here are some pics. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v.../PICT0003_1.jpg

I used a 21/64 bit for the main barrel hole, then an 1/8 bit to drill out and smooth the area where the cable pulls through. Careful not to drill the main hole too deep.

If you are really careful, you can get the cover off without damaging the gasket. I've had mine off several times and reused the gasket with no leakage problems.

Stupid question time: By doing this did you reroute your clutch cable to the left side of the motor? If you did then the clutch release arm has to turn about 90 degrees so it faces forward. I'm trying to figure out if I can change my 03 to the 04/05 style. The mounts look like they will fit fine. I just need to find out if the 04/05 release arm will fit my 03. Thanks!!

My results are different, I added 1/2 inch (12-13mm) to the arm and I think it is a worthwhile mod to my '03 450 I haven't felt the need for rerouting the cable with the '04 style cable. Lengthening the arm didn't have any effect on the clutch grabbiness. I MX mine and didn't think it was a big enough issue to worry about until the clutch wears out.
