YZ450FX + GYTR tuner issues

Recommended Posts

Has anybody tried using the GYTR tuner on their 450FX yet? I ran into some issues with the tuner showing the message "failure to connect to the ECU" and I'm wondering if anybody else has experienced the same problem.

Ultimately I got the tuner to work after a lot of trial and error, summarized below.

First I verified that the tuner works on my 2012 450F and it worked fine. I tried disconnecting the battery on the FX. Didn't help. Side note, the battery voltage is 12.7v with the engine off, 14v with the engine on. I then checked continuity of the red, green, white/black wires between the tuner and ECU plugs. Everything was good. Next I tried NI-MH batteries in the tuner which didn't make a difference. I don't think they are necessary anyways since the tuner automatically powers on when plugged in, powered by the bike's battery.

I finally found the only way to get the tuner to recognize the ECU is to hook it up, let it power up automatically, start the bike and let it run for a minute or two. At this point you can access the "monitor" fuctions. As usual you can not send a map with the engine running. The tuner will still recognize the ECU for enough time to send a map once you shut the engine off. If I let the bike sit for a half hour or so its back to square one and the tuner will not work again without starting the engine.

At the end of the day I'm not sure why the tuner is so temperamental with the FX. I wanted to post my findings in case anybody else runs into the same problem. I was starting to have some bad thoughts last night that the ECU might be toast, or there was an electrical problem that would have warranted taking her back to the dealer.

Try fresh batteries.

Find out if there's a firmware update for the tuner.

From what I can tell there is most likely not an issue with the batteries in the tuner. I have tried two different brands of new alkalines, and two different brands of fresh charged NI-MH cells that work fine in other devices. The other thing is the tuner works without fail on the 12 YZF with any batteries.

The bottom line is that the tuner is powered by the battery on the FX when plugged in, so the 12v and amps from that should be overkill compared to two AA's.

I have also found that the tuner actually doesn't need batteries in it at all to function when connected to the FX. I was able to use the monitor page and send a map with no batteries in the tuner but..... I had to do the same drill of letting the bike run for a minute before it would work.

I'm starting to think there is something weird going on with the voltage present in the ECU after the bike has sat for a while, since it always works right after getting 14 volts from the charging system. Pure speculation.

In regards to firmware, I don't think there are any updates or any way to install them from what I've seen. The Yamaha motor website page for the tuner shows compatibility for the 16 450FX. I verified the part # for the tuner is still the same as mine as well.

I'm anxious to hear from anybody with a FX to see if they have the same problem. I've got about 3 days left on my warranty so I'm kind of teetering on if I should take the bike to the dealer.

With the 250 FX you hit the start button but do not start it. Then plug the tuner in, the power tuner then powers up and you can change settings.

This works. I could end the story there but I seem to have an affinity for long winded posts right now, so I'd like to elaborate on an observation I had right before trying this method.

I decided to leave the tuner connected to the bike for about a half hour or so to see if it would disconnect or lose communication with the ECU. It did not. I disconnected/connected it 3 times and it still worked. Things were getting weird at this point.

Then after the 3rd time I heard a relay click near the battery. I plugged the tuner in and got the "failure to connect to ECU" message again.

At this point I used 53willys method and the tuner worked again.

So I guess whatever relay (starter?) I heard pop off has to be energized for the tuner to work. End of story.

Where exactly is this documented ?   I looked everywhere for instructions but couldn't find them.  I couldn't find it in the service manual.

To get the tuner to work you need to hook it up and hit the starter. You don't need to read run the bike, just cycle the power. That's how it works on all of the bikes with the tuner.

It's documented by the thousands of people that use the tuner....

I couldn't find anything in the manual either. It makes me wonder if the manual for the tuner has been, or will be revised noting this procedure since the new WRs and FXs have been released. That could be helpful. Good thing we have TT.

Nice update. I've had the same problem (can't connect to ECU) and I thought it may have been Yamaha preventing folks from adjusting ignition or fuel injection (they're a lot more worried about the Feds than KTM). I didn't try running the bike as I was worried it could blow the tuner with a power surge and even went so far as to buy a new power tuner in case there was an update to the programming. I'll give this a try and thanks for finding the work around. Funny that MXA or Dirt Bike didn't mention this.

Pretty sure if they were worried about the EPA or Feds as you say, they would not make it so you could use the tuner on the bike. I doubt they would provide maps as well.

Voltage on the bike is regulated.

Neither the EPA nor KTM has anything to say about modifying the the tuning on the FX since it's not a "green sticker" emission controlled bike like the WR
