IMS Tank for the 2016 WR450

Recommended Posts

  • 2 months later...

Hi Team.

I've ordered a 2016 WR450F and am gathering fargles and bling in anticipation of its arrival.

Will be using the bike for extended enduro riding and am concerned about fuel range. A recent article quoted 50 miles (80kms) on a tank. One of my local loops is 100 miles (160kms).

Looking hard at the IMS 3 gallon (11.3 litre) tank for extended range.

Has anyone fitted one yet? Any mods necessary? Black or Natural?

Feedback/pics please.

Gaz.

I just installed the IMS tank 3.0gal on my 2015 WR450F... Fit great easy install no problems. Now trying to figure out if it is designed to run without the battery. It seems they redesigned them to be able to but cant find verification.

I havent seen a 3.0g for the FX/WR that doesn't have the shrouds incorporated.

If anyone was serious, I would gladly send my IMS tank YZF to soemone and let them try and retrofit it...

Nice offer Mr. Monk. But so far as I can tell your YZ tank won't fit the 16 WR, FX models. I had a talk with IMS and they confirmed the battery and the electronics on the inner rear fender will be in the way.

Supposedly the uglier larger IMS tank is a bolt on to the WR and FX models. Acerbis is supposed to be coming out with a little larger tank for the 250 model and it may be a bolt on.

I am getting about 33 miles with about a half gallon of gas left. However with the type of full throttle hill climbing and nasty trails it's pretty good milage.

My old CR500 use to have to use an extra .8 gal tank to do the same riding.

I wonder if it could be done. Smaller battery under the skidplate or such...

It would be nice. However there is a lot of wiring under there. I am using the smaller battery it could be relocated under the side plate possibly. IMS thought it would be too much trouble and scraped the idea.

The YZ tank also has a different fuel pump that has a side outlet and no provision for the fuel light.

Another choice would be this 15L tank Safari designed for the 2015 WR250f that should work on the 2016 450. Only thing is it looks like a nightmare changing the air filter.
