Anyone pick up a 450FX yet?

Recommended Posts

Currently have a 2015 KTM 300 XC that I am very pleased with. Looking to pick up a new 4 stroke this spring and am seriously torn between the 450 XCF and 450FX. I have always been a KTM guy but seriously won't think twice about leaving the 4CS behind. I weigh 180 lbs and an Intermediate/Expert rider. I think the 450 will be suffice because although I do run lots of tight technical races here in AZ with AMRA, I also participate in Hare and Hounds and the BITD series. I obviously would love to ride both to compare but haven't came across the opportunity. Has anyone came off a 300 or ridden both new bikes that could possibly convince me to pick one over the other? I read the new dirtbike test that Jimmy Lewis did but the conclusion was pretty open ended.

Thanks,

-Jake

I recently bought an fx and own a 2014 Husqvarna TE 300, crawling through wet snotty NE rocks and roots the 300 motor is in its element. I've only got a couple rides on the FX and its definatly more prone to stalling in those conditions, I chalk some of that up to getting used to a thumper. On the flip side I've reced the Husky for two seasons and after 3 revalves the 4cs forks still deflect badly at speed and I can't seem to come to terms with them so I went with the Yammi. So far I would say the the only place the 300 has it over the fx is slow almost trials like conditions, I'm definatly more confidant at speed through the rocks and roots on the fx. Just ordered a 51 tooth rear, should help with the low speed stuff.

I like the 300 in the rocks better solely because of the clutch. I like my 500 better in the rocks then the 300.

I'm reading my own posts, 3 difrent bikes in one post, I need a support group

Recently purchased an FX. I have one ride on it, a small 20 mile ride. Here's what I like:

It feels VERY light, turns on a dime.

Great power but it seems to sometimes conflict with the gearing if that makes sense. Front wheel comes off the ground almost too easy. (Throttle control, and body position should resolve this)

Things I need to do before I'll ride it again, because it was literally unrideable for me.

Raise the bars, lower the pegs and respring the suspensions. I'm going to leave the valving alone to try out but I may change that as well.

In short, great power, even better handling, but built for a little guy. I was very uncomfortable on it.

How it compares to the 300. No idea. I'm coming off a CRF450X.

Built for a little guy you said. Hum are you 7' tall and weigh around 320. Kidding but you must be tall. I think the bike was made for tall people and at least around 180 lbs. +

No, I'm 6'2" but i have short legs (32 inseam) but my my upper body is that of a guy 6'8". I'm awkward as hell. I had to do the same thing with my honda.

Springs came yesterday and I just finished ordering Scotts submount with CR high bend bars... So soon we shall see.

How tall are you and what do you weigh if you don't mind me asking?

Do the triples allow for a forward adjustment?

There are 2 holes on the top clamp to adjust the bar mounts as well as turning the mounts around. 4 positions to choose from.

Not sure if you can use the furthest forward position with the Scotts sub mount, you can only go as far as position 3 with the top mount. One of the members here fabbed their own top mount so they could run position 4.

Yep that made a huge difference. Before, in order to stand I had to always be in the attack position or else I felt like I was going over the bars. Adjusted to the fourth position and what a difference, amazing.

Hopefully the submount will allow me to keep it there.

I hated to think I bought something I wasn't going to like. Those thoughts are gone. :ride:   Still needs some work but nothing money won't fix.

What is the forth position? Can you explain what you did? Thanks

There are 2 positions the barclamps can bolt to. I moved the barclamps to the forward position. You can also rotate the bar clamps 180deg. to give a total of four positions. 1 being the closest to rider. Factory position is #2 position.

Remove your bar pad and it becomes very clear.

Yeah, get used to the 'little guy' ergos as the new trend for all off road motorcycles...

I WANT TO RIDE THE FX ! (please)
