2002 xr650r losing parts.

Recommended Posts

while doing a thorough wash on bike in preperation for the uncorking ceremony, I found my kickstart lever was loose, I lost a bolt on the rear fender, and a foot peg was loose. what else should I be checking, the bike only has about 4 hours on it. 40 miles at most.

also do you think it is too soon to uncork it. I have changed the oil and filter, and installed the new tip, but want very badly to do the air box and carb mods, ?

Don't forget to check your spokes and that's true of any bike, especially when new. Depending on how far you want to dig into things, you may also want to consider tearing part of the bike down to grease the steering head bearings, swingarm & shock linkages, etc. It would definitely be a good idea to put a dab of anti-seize on the chain adjuster bolts right now to minimize potential future corrosion problems. Definitely keep the foot peg bolts tight or you'll break a peg off.

Check out this web, especially the FAQ. It might be a bit overwhemling at first with these issues, but don't get discouraged because this bike is very reliable and low in maintenance compared to others. After a few hundred miles and during an oil change, make sure to remove and clean the oil downtube screen. Don't be concerned if you see crud inside there because that's normal for the first oil change. There might be a little more crud in there on the second oil change (doubtful), but it should stay clean after that until you replace your clutch.

The rear subframe attachment nut, which is under the seat, should be blue loctited. If it's still there of course. Also the spokes loosen alot during break-in. All of these things are normal for a dirt bike during break-in. I like to take the shock linkage apart and grease it regularly because it doesn't come with much lube in it.

You can fully uncork the bike anytime, even before it's broken in.

Exactly like my XR, nothing to worry about.
