New WR450 or YZ450FX?

Recommended Posts

You're wrong KRANNIE.

I was quoting an article published in Dirt Bike Magazine.

Not true at all, check the part numbers.   The piston, head, cams, crankshaft, and flywheel are the same on the 2015 WR250F and YZ250FX.  In fact, the piston and head are the same between a YZF, WRF, & YZ250FX.  The WR250FX and YZFX share the same transmission too.

My '15 WR250F with the comp kit, remapping, and a Q4 muffler, is faster than a stock YZ250FX.  Not really a pile of work IMO, and not a surprise considering two bikes are mechanically the same engine.

Most of the magazines are knee jerk experts, and probably read the "YZ" on the YZ250FX's decals and then automatically assumed it is a YZF with changes with minimal relationship to a WR250F.  The real story, is that a FX is basically a WR without lights, but with stiffer suspension and some detail changes.

Every article I have read says the YZ and YZFX are the exact same motor accept for the ECU and transmission ratios, and that the WR has lower compression, and a different head and cams.

You are saying the YZFX is a WR motor with a different ECU.....with the only difference from the YZ motor is the camset.

I cannot find any parts fiche info on the YZ250FX or the WR250f to verfiy this.

Where did you find this info.

I just looked it up for 2015

Yes indeed, the YZ250F has a different intake cam than the FX and WR, which share the same cams.

Everything else in the head is the same on all three.

Hopefully the 450FX has the YZ cam....?

Just buy the WR and do a couple of mods. That's what I think I will do. Suspension always needs to be set up for the riders weight. WR is green stickered and already has the lights.

Just looked up the 15 WR250 has the same piston and head as the YZ.

The WR's have more than enough power FOR ME  once all the ECU, throttle stop, snorkle, and exhaust mods are taken care of so there really should be no issue.

....but not even close for me.. I get passed on the uphills and have trouble pulling the next gear on  hills sometimes unless the motor is massaged quite a bit.

The whole red/green sticker issue is complete b.s. as is the smog crap on motorcycles.  I really need someone from the EPA to sit down with me and explain how it is that a little device that pumps more fresh air into my exhaust port is able to magically make my engine run cleaner as opposed to just diluting what's coming out the tail pipe. .  And more so, how is it if it did anything in the first place, do we really believe that California alone is going to save the world, much less the rest of the U.S. which doesn't take these measures?

Get mad if you want, but it won't change the way things are.

Pumping air into the exahaust actually does burn the unburnt fuel...hence all the popping.

But that's not the point....and every state in the union has follwed the CA EPA restrictions (though 7 years behind) accept RI.

I modify all my green sticker bikes to be red sticker level and way beyond, so I don't care.

Krannie, the way you quoted me makes it look like I answered my own question lol.  I know nothing will change, just sucks that California seems to be the tail that wags the dog.  Other states follow suit on the smog equipment then it is likely they will follow suit on some of the other ridiculous ideas such as the red/green sticker program.  Don't be fooled thinking this is more about the environment than it is about a money grab.  I heard a 2-stroke weed wacker fire up at 7am this morning.  There are a hell of a lot more of those around and in use during motorcycle red sticker season, and in the center of the city, than red sticker bikes out in the boonies.  The EPA and CARB must truly believe that those smoking, puking, dripping things with archaic type carbs are cleaner than a fuel injected 4 stroke...I don't think so.  I also ride during red sticker season, but only in the desert and only at night.  If they want to dedicate the assets on the ground and air to chase me around so they can check the color of my sticker (actually my son's) they are more than welcome to and I wish them lots of luck.  We're so enviro-concerned over here yet right next door in AZ they can plate a 2 or 4 stroke mx bike or 2 or 4 stroke quad to ride on the street.  Hmmm!!!

Anyway, rant over.  Yes the WR is similar enough to the FX that it is almost negligible.  I can see most of the country going with the FX and most of the Cali peeps going with the WR.  These are going to be great bikes, Yammie will sell a boat load of them.  Hopefully it will bring Honda, Suzuki, and especially Kawi out of their self induced coma to produce some similar bikes as well.

You are reading articles in the wrong places, or reading the same wrong article more than once.   The YZ250F is very different than the YZ250FX.

You can find Yamaha parts in many websites.  A person such as yourself with over 30,000 posts on TT should easily be able locate Yam OEM parts.  I'll help you though- go to Rocky Mountain ATV and click on the OEM Parts box on the upper left.

We're talking 250s here, so don't assume it's the same routine for the 450.

Believe me, I checked this out:

The FX and WR250F have the same crankshaft, charging, flywheel, head, camshafts, transmission, electric start.

The YZF has diff cams, crankshaft, flywheel, charging, 5 sp tranny, kick starting only.

This is not really very complicated to understand.

I just looked up the WR250 cams are a different part number than the YZ. So likley a cam change if one wanted the same power band as a YZ.

Depends which year model WR250F.  On the older WR250Fs, a YZF OEM cam is a nice change for the person looking for a power boost to the higher rpms.

But, for the 2015, IMO, go with the stock WR cam.  It's a good cam which matches well to the overall manners of the 2015 WR250F's wide ratio transmission.

It won't.  For sure the decompression pin on the exhaust cam has to be different so that the electric start works on the FX and the WR.

Green sticker... What a load of crock. It's a non issue for 49 of the 50 states yet is made out to be such a big deal in all of the magazines.

That being said, I really hope Yamaha makes. YZ350FX in the near future. I would like to buy one for my next bike in 2020.

It's not even an issue in California outside of SoCal. The whole no-red sticker thing only affects a handful of offroad parks that no one wants to ride at anyway in NorCal.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

WR with all the extra steel brackets and epa stuff removed, GYTR kit, Suspension and tall ergo mods, and a set of Webb cams.........

I wonder if the 2016 WR intake cam is the same as a 2015, and can take the modded '06 YZ cam ?

Yes to all above but the new one is a four valve head. So no 06' cam.

Yea maybe. But I'm looking for power so a ported head possibly more compression and a cam to match.

Well that's why we have this "duh" forum to talk about stuff that could shed some light on the issue. Sounds like you are in the "know" care to help explain the differences or do you really have "nothing" to say on the matter? ?

Thanks for participating either way

A Google search will tell you all the differences your looking for. Basically, IMO. Do you plan on getting it plated? That would be the deciding factor for me. No foul intended.
