2016 yz450fx just released

Recommended Posts

That is a massive weight saving for removing the kick starter.   It can't be true.

How does the YZ250FX start in gear ?  I fail to see the reason to have an electric starter on a bike if you need to find neutral to use it, especially if it kick starts in gear.

What if you stall or stop it 35 times a day? Still don't want an estart ?

If it stalls 35x a day, change the clutch, gearing or rider.  I ride my WR450 in extremely tight conditions.  Maybe stall 2-3 times a day due to stupidity, like putting along in 2nd gear and not realizing I'm not in first, that sort of thing.  And when I do stall it, it fires right back up.

I ride with a guy on a 2015 YZ450F.  He does have a bit of a stalling issue.  And it doesn't start well.  We are working on both.  But it is not too bad.

I'd rather kick my WR back to life than have to find neutral and use an electric starter, but that is probably just me.

These new EFI bikes start great once you get them sorted out.

Now if we are talking a good working estart system with just about no weight penalty over a kick starter, I'm interested.

The 250fx starts in gear as well as it starts in neutral. My wr450 started in gear as well as my 250fx.

What if there's 35 stops in a day? Ever clear trails of windfall? Even re-open a long lost forgotten trail? Ever ride with buddies of varying ability? Ever ride a very scenic trail and like to take in the vistas?

He mentioned stops in addition to stalls. Sometimes ya gotta stop too. Buttons work good for that too.

The YZ250FX starts ingear by pulling in the clutch, I have had mine since January and have not used the kickstart yet

+1.  Have had my WR for 2 years and never use the kick start.  On my '08 WR I ALWAYS had to use it when the engine was cold.  Weird thing though, I have not had any luck bump starting this F.I. bike, not sure why.  That alone would make me want to keep the kicker.  If I had to lose one, it would be the e-start and would imagine that to be a greater weight savings.

2 gallon tank - FAIL

5 speed trans - FAIL

Hey Yamaha, look around and see what everyone is riding......... Yeah build that, you already have by far the best suspension.

Sheesh, it's not that difficult.

The 450 XC-F has a 2.25 gallon tank, not much bigger

The 450 XC-F has the SAME 5 speed tranny as the 450 SX-F..that is a fail. At least the YZFX is wide ratio.  Anyways, with 55+ HP and wide useable power why not go with a 5 speed? The less shifting the better.

Last weekend we got about 10 miles into a ride when my friend's exotic bike died.  We spent the next 4 hours getting that thing out one hill at a time.  I bet I kicked my bike way more than 35x, because we didn't ride for more than 10 minutes before we had to pull over and assist or stop and discuss a route or plain take a break.

People need to understand that my WR starts incredibly well.  Even my friend who has estart on his bike thought so.  Couldn't believe how well it starts, in fact.

That isn't to say I wouldn't like estart on a bike.

The thing I missed most that day was a kick stand.  First time I ever missed it too.

My 2012 WR bump starts easily rolling down the smallest incline.  But I've done some mods to make it start better.  Put it in 3rd or 4th gear, keep the throttle closed and let out the clutch and its running.

Does anyone know where the instructions are for installing the kick starter removal kit ?   Does one have to split the cases ?

My '08 bump started criminally easy.  Maybe I'm subconsciously opening the throttle.  Will have to pay more attention to that next time I try.

Just guessing here, but would imagine it to be the reverse of what DRZ owners do to put their kickstarter on.  To remove the kind of weight they are claiming it has to be more than just the lever and involves some gears/shaft.  That would normally mean the right hand side case has to be taken off.

I agree with Outer Limits. I added a kick starter to my DRZ (and removed it before selling it) and the kick starter assembly looks the same as the WR. No case splitting required on the DRZ, only have to remove the clutch cover (and clutch basket).

My FI WR bumps starts super easy.Only need to be moving 10 km/h to have enough momentum to start the bike (pretty much idling in second).

The entire kick start assembly is outside of the main crankcases.  Remove the right cover and the clutch, remove the starter and the idler gear, slip the "plug shaft" into the hole in the case, and put things back together.

What kind of weight savings are we talking here?  The Yamaha site claims 15.25 lbs but that has to be a typo, right?

We talked about that already.  Not more than 5-6 pounds, tops, I'm thinking.  Just not that much to it.  Someone else postulated that 15.25 lbs is probably the weight of the electric starter and associated parts.  For scale, the complete engine in an '06 YZ450F, including the whole kick starter, weighs 71 pounds.

To all the "so called riders" out there. Quit complaining about the weight of the 4ts. Don't like it, get a 2t. I find it so funny. These bikes are phenomial. Each year they get better and better. More hp, less weight, better egros, suspension etc. And every year the "riders" still bitch about the same old things. Cant have it all.

I think the yz 250x, yz 250/450 fx is a step on the right direction. Patience, give it time. And until then, shut up and Ride !

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm not worried about the weight, just excited about that super planted platform. I think it's great it's more YZish, if you want a huge tank and a 6th gear then you should be looking at a WR.

What HP numbers is the YZF putting out? I guess it's safe to say that the FX will be down 2 or 3.

I can't find any ride reports...no one in the industry has ridden one?
