Exhaust, air filter, re-jet properly, cover yourself and your bike with pam cooking spray to reduce wind resistance.

The usual carb and pipe then with more money and effort cam and piston. The 87 XL might have the smaller 28mm carbs that can be replaced with earlier larger 30mm XL carbs. My experience with the XL is a rejet and AF will make it run better but not much more for power.
