2015 WR450F Fuel syphoning

Hello, I am going to buy a 2015 WR450F in the next couple of weeks. I am still looking for a garage to keep it in at the moment, so until then I will have to keep it in my storage unit.

 

My problem is they are insisting the fuel is drained before storage, can anyone tell me if there are any obstructions in the fuel tank to stop me syphoning out the fuel like a filter or anti theft measures?

You should just remove the tank and drain it.

Do NOT turn on the ignition or run the motor with no fuel in the tank, as the fuel pump needs fuel for lubrication.

Thanks for your reply Krannie, I was thinking I could remove tank as a last resort but was trying to find out about  syphoning as it will be going in and out of the store quite frequently, thanks for the tip about not turning on ignition with empty tank.

Can anyone tell me once the fuel tank is unbolted is there enougth slack in the cables or at least the fuel pipe at the bottom of the tank so I can leave the fuel pipe attached while I tip the tank in to a fuel can?

Nope.

You will have to unplug the fuel pump electrical and fuel supply lines.

Thank you for your help, Its a pain having to drain the fuel, I was going to wait untill I got a garage, just a very tempting offer from the dealer I will have to go and see if the dealer will let me poke around in the fuel tank.

You could use a siphoning gas can set up pretty easily.....but it won't get all the gas out. There will be many ounces still remaining.

I believe that is the issue your storage company. If the open the gas cap and smell any gas present, you will not get to store the bike.

get most of it out, hang an air freshener and move it in and out when people aren't looking.

Thanks for all your help, I will syphon the tank, if anyones not happy I will remove the tank, only tricky bit seems to be the orange clip, maybe take 10 minutes once I have done it a couple of times?

I've thought about this as I used to drain the tank on my '08 after every ride because it was so easy and I really never knew when I'd ride next.  Have not done it yet on my '12 but I would try the siphon method leaving the take and all the lines and plugs intact before going through all of that.  I've found that what works pretty well is to take a wooden dowl or metal rod and zip tie the siphon line to that with the end of the tube just a bit below the end of the rod.  That way when you try to reach the very bottom of the tank it's much easier as you can put the hose exactly where you want it and get nearly all the fuel out.  On the newer models it doesn't have the lobes that hang down on each side so it should be easier.  You still won't get it all, but damn close.  It's gonna smell like gas whether it's dry or has a couple ounces in it anyway.

Might be more efficient to work on the landlord once rather than drain fuel every time you wanna ride. Does s/he want $...need something fixed...drink scotch?!? Or move. Whatever you do just GET THE BIKE!

Thanks for the reply, thats a good idea about the dowel to help syphon in the corners, I think the vacuum pumps that are used to change oil without removing sump plug would work well for last few drops.

 

Guru regarding the Landlord its a commercial storage unit that I use for my business, 2 of the 3 people that work there are fine and wouldn't care if the fuel is drained or not but there is one person that can be funny. Worst case I might have to show her the tank is empty, which as got me thinking about a KTM300, clear tank so I can show her no fuel and really easy to remove tank and drain carb.

 

Thats a last resort though as I do prefer the Yamaha but leaving any bike on the street is not an option.
